With the scored tied at zero, freshman Christine Clark delivered the one and only goal of the game in the 69th minute to lead the Bears (4-4-0) to a 1-0 victory over Houston (4-2-0) on Sunday at Betty Lou Mays Field.
"I am really proud of the girls' grittiness today," head coach Marci Jobson said. "We battled all day long and it finally paid off."
Midfield play dominated the first 45 minutes as both teams battled for possession of the ball and the game. The Bears best opportunity came in the 22nd minute when Lotto Smith dribbled past a pair of Cougar defenders, blasting a shot from 18 yards out that was saved by the Houston keeper and keeping the score tied at zero heading into the break.
Unwilling to yield a goal, Baylor's defense was up to the challenge as Houston came out firing in the second half. Despite taking six shots in the first 23 minutes, no Cougar attempt made it on goal and the score remained knotted at zero.
Forward Christine Clark changed all that with her goal in the 69th minute. After collecting a thru ball, freshman Hannah Dismuke attempted to flick the ball passed Cougar goalie, Shelby Scott, who thwarted the opportunity but allowed a rebound straight to Clark's feet, allowing her to tap the ball in for a 1-0 lead.
For the rest of the game, the Bears kept the Cougars at bay, allowing no clean looks at the goal. Houston managed just two shots in the final 22 minutes and Baylor walked away with a 1-0 victory.
Houston outshot Baylor 12-7 in the game, but managed just one shot on goal to the Bears' five.
Baylor will return to the pitch on Friday, Sept. 26 as the Bears hit the road for the first time in 27 days, taking on Texas State at 7 p.m. in San Marcos.
