Final Stats
SAN MARCOS, Texas -
One hundred and ten minutes was not enough to decide a winner as Baylor and Texas State battled to a 0-0 tie on Friday night at the Bobcat Soccer Complex. With the tie, the Bears move to 4-4-1 overall, while the Bobcats move to 3-3-2.
Baylor brought intensity from the start, as Lotto Smith's shot in the third minute was saved after the Bears earned an early corner kick. The Bears continued the pressure throughout the half, outshooting the Bobcats, 5-1 in the opening stanza.
Texas State turned the momentum in its favor in the second, but a stifling Baylor defense, that included a blocked shot in the 90th minute, kept the game scoreless.
The Bears tried to end the game in the first overtime period, pounding out three shots that forced a pair of saves by Bobcat goalkeeper Mandi Mawyer, but Baylor was unable to find the back of the net. Texas State took its turn in the second overtime, forcing Baylor keeper, Courtney Seelhorst to come up with four big saves to keep the game knotted at zeros.
Smith led the Baylor attack with three shots in the game, while Katie White, Lindsey Johnson and Bethany Johnston had two shots apiece for the Bears.
Friday night marked nearly a year to the date since the Bears last overtime game, which occurred on Sept. 28, 2007 with a 2-2 tie with Kansas in Waco.
Baylor will return to Betty Lou Mays Field to open conference play against No. 7 Texas A&M on Sunday at 7 p.m. The first 200 fans will receive a Baylor Growl Towel, while the first 500 fans will receive a Baylor Cheer Card. It is also Youth Soccer Night, with any child eighth grade or under receiving $2 admission for wearing their soccer jersey.
