WACO, Texas - The Baylor women's tennis team added Nina Secerbegovic (Scher-CHER-beg-uh-vich) to its 2009 spring roster, head coach Joey Scrivano announced on Wednesday. Secerbegovich enrolled at Baylor in January as a true freshman.
Secerbegovic is a native of Tuzla, Bornia & Herzegovina where she prepped at the Gimnasium Mesa Selimovic for head coach Joguncic Admir. She is a five-time national champion having won the national title at the U-10, U-12, U-14, U-16 and U-18 classifications Secerbegovic won a gold medal at the International Children's Games in Ohio in 2004. A four-time member of the Bosnia & Herzegovina Fed Cup team, playing on the 2004-07 squads, Secerbegovic holds an 8-1 doubles record in Fed Cup play, a national record for doubles wins at the tournament. She was named the Tuzla athlete of the year in 2006 and 2004 and the Best Teenage Athlete in 2005 and 2004.
"Nina is a great addition to our program," said Scrivano. "She is a true freshman with the veteran experience of representing her country in Fed Cup competition. She is a pure ball striker with a lot of firepower off both sides, and I believe she will make an immediate impact on our team this spring and beyond."
The Lady Bears open the spring season this weekend, traveling to the UNLV/Freeman Memorial and the National Collegiate Tennis Classic. Baylor opens dual-match play by hosting the National Indoor Qualifier on Jan. 31 against Princeton.
