WACO, Texas - Sophomore Nina Secerbegovic beat second-seeded Marta Lesniak and ninth-seeded Kayla Duncan to earn a spot in the finals of the Wilson/ITA Texas Regional on Monday at the Baylor Tennis Center.
In the quarterfinal round, Secerbegovic took the first set 6-3, then battled through a tie-break to win the second set 7-6(8) over SMU's Lesniak. The semifinal was a different story as the sophomore dropped just one game on her way to a 6-0, 6-1 straight sets win over TCU's Duncan. In Tuesday's championship, Secerbegovic will take on No. 3-seed Aeriel Ellis of Texas, who beat BU's Csilla Borsanyi 6-3, 6-1 in the quarters.
"That match against Lezniak was a real tough one," head coach Joey Scrivano said. "I think Lezniak is arguably the best player in the region. She's come into college tennis with some real big-time results. So for Nina to find a way to beat her that was a really good sign for us and obviously a big win.
In other quarterfinal action, Baylor's top-seeded Lenka Broosova was upset by ninth-seeded Krista Damico of Texas in straight sets 6-1, 6-4. BU's Carla Lindlar, competing in the consolation bracket, went down to SMU's Shahazoda Hatamova 6-1, 7-6(5).
"(Broosova and Borsanyi losing) was real disappointing, but in a way, I'm excited, because I love the challenge of trying to get back on track," Scrivano said. "We have a formula to be very good. But to be the very best, it's going to take a little more. We've got to try different things. And if we don't try to develop these kids in a different way, we'll never know. So we're going to take our chances this fall.
The singles championship matches for both the main draw and consolation brackets will take place at 11:30 a.m., while both doubles championships matches will start at 2 p.m. at the Baylor Tennis Center on Tuesday.
