BERKELEY, Calif. - California won four singles matches as the eighth-ranked Golden Bears defeated fifth-ranked Baylor, 4-3, on Tuesday morning at the Hellman Tennis Complex.
Baylor drops its fourth match of the season, one more loss than the Bears recorded during the entire 2008 season. All four of Baylor's losses this season have come by a 4-3 score.
For the third-straight match, Baylor won the doubles point, earning victories on courts two and three. No. 24 Csilla Borsanyi and Lenka Broosova defeated Bojana Bobusic and Claire Ilcinkas, 8-3, on court two to get Baylor on the board first. Nina Secerbegovic and Kasia Siwosz clinched the point for Baylor on court three with an 8-6 win over Stephany Chang and Marion Ravelojaona. Moments later on court one, No. 13 Mari Andersson and Jana Juricova defeated No. 55 Taylor Ormond and Jelena Stanivuk, 8-3.
California evened the match at 1-1 with a win on court four as No. 23 Bobusic downed No. 73 Borsanyi, 6-0, 6-1. Secerbegovic put Baylor back in front with a 6-0, 6-2 win on court five over Ravelojaona.
No. 26 Juricova defeated No. 46 Broosova, 6-0, 6-2, on court one to give the Golden Bears a 2-1 lead. Cal stretched the lead to 3-1 as No. 42 Ilcinkas rallied from a one-set deficit to down No. 34 Stanivuk, 2-6, 6-2, 6-2, on court three. Chang defeated Siwosz, 7-6 (3), 6-0, on court six before No. 32 Ormond rallied after dropping the first set to defeat No. 74 Andersson, 2-6, 6-1, 6-3.
With the loss, Baylor drops to 6-4 overall this year. California improves to 8-3 on the season. Baylor returns to action on Friday as the Lady Bears open their Big 12 Conference schedule by hosting Texas Tech at 1:30 p.m. at the Baylor Tennis Center.
