ENNIS, Texas - For the second time in three home matches the fifth-ranked Baylor women's tennis team was forced indoors due to inclement weather. After traveling to the Ennis Racquet Club indoor courts, the Lady Bears made quick work of No. 62 Texas Tech, sweeping the Red Raiders to open conference play.
"I'm proud of the way our team rebounded from a tough loss to Cal," said head coach Joey Scrivano. "We executed at a high level today against a solid Texas Tech team. We are definitely moving in the right direction again."
No. 24 Lenka Broosova and Csilla Borsanyi defeated Kerryn Potgieter and Stefanie Peana, 8-2, on court two to open doubles play. No. 57 Kelsy Garland and Sam van der Drift upset No. 55 Taylor Ormond and Jelena Stanivuk, 8-3, on court one to even the score. On court three, Nina Secerbegovic and Kasia Siwosz defeated Simone Templeton and Natalie Leitch, 8-6, to secure the doubles point.
The Lady Bears swept through the six singles matches, losing just nine total games. No. 46 Broosova rolled over van der Drift, 6-0, 6-0, on court one, while No. 73 Borsanyi dropped just one game to Peana, 6-0, 6-1. No. 34 Stanivuk shut out Leitch, 6-0, 6-0, on court four to clinch the match.
No. 32 Ormond downed Garland, 6-3, 6-1, on court two, while Secerbegovic blanked Potgieter, 6-0, 6-0, on court five. On court six, Siwosz defeated Kyla Coleman, 6-1, 6-3, to complete the sweep.
Baylor returns to action on Saturday at 12 noon as the Lady Bears play host to defending national champion, ninth-ranked UCLA at the Baylor Tennis Center.
"We are very excited to be playing the defending national champs UCLA at home tomorrow," said Scrivano. "This should be a great match between two of the top programs in the nation, college tennis doesn't get much better than this."
