WACO, Texas - Lenka Broosova won a second-set tiebreaker to defeat Andrea Remynse, 6-3, 7-6 (5) on court two as the fifth-ranked Baylor women's tennis team held on to defeat ninth-ranked and defending national champion UCLA on Saturday afternoon at the Baylor Tennis Center.
The win for Baylor is its third of the season over a Top 10-ranked team. Earlier this season the Lady Bears defeated then-10th-ranked Miami (Fla.), 4-2, and then-fourth-ranked Georgia Tech, 5-2.
"UCLA has a great young team and they forced us to raise our level of play today," said head coach Joey Scrivano. "They are definitely a team that is going to make a run in College Station."
UCLA took an early 1-0 lead after winning the closely contested doubles point. Nina Secerbegovic and Kasia Siwosz defeated Nina Pantic and Ashley Joelson, 9-7, on court three before fifth-ranked Yasmin Schnak and Remynse downed No. 24 Broosova and Csilla Borsanyi, 8-6, on court one. In the deciding doubles match, No. 76 Stephanie Wetmore and Carling Seguso won a tiebreaker over No. 55 Taylor Ormond and Jelena Stanivuk, 9-8 (4) on court two.
"I'm proud of the way we responded after losing a tight doubles point," said Scrivano. "We came out in singles on a mission and it turned the momentum of the match in our favor."
Secerbegovic made quick work of Joelson on court five, winning 6-2, 6-0, to even the match at 1-1. No. 73 Borsanyi defeated No. 112 Pantic, 6-4, 6-1, on court four to put Baylor in the lead. Baylor won its third-straight singles match as No. 34 Stanivuk rolled over No. 81 Maya Johansson, 6-0, 6-1, on court three.
No. 19 Schnack defeated No. 32 Ormond in straight sets, 7-5, 6-3, on court one, while Seguso downed Siwosz, 7-5, 7-5, on court six.
With the match all square at 3-3, No. 46 Broosova rallied from a 5-1 second-set deficit to win over No. 27 Remynse to clinch the match.
"Lenks embraces the big moments and is always trying to find a way to win," said Scrivano. "She wants to be in the pressure situations where everyone is depending on her to win the team match. She's definitely a big match player who you want on your team. This was without a doubt one of the best college tennis matches played this year and it will be exciting to see it televised. I want to thank all the people and sponsors who made this event possible."
Baylor returns to action on Wednesday for the third of five straight home matches as the Lady Bears play host to No. 13 Kentucky at 5 p.m. at the Baylor Tennis Center.
