WACO, Texas - After a 7-0 morning win over Iowa State, the fourth-ranked Baylor women's tennis team completed the sweep of the Saturday doubleheader, blanking No. 58 Nebraska, 7-0, in the afternoon match.
Baylor moves to 11-4 overall this season, including a 3-0 mark in Big 12 Conference action. The Lady Bears also extend their home match winning streak to nine straight matches this year, and 16 in a row dating back to last season.
"I felt like Iowa State is a much improved team," said head coach Joey Scrivano. "Their new head coach is doing a really great job. They gave us a good match in some of the singles spots and forced us to play some good tennis. It is good to see that program is on the right track."
Baylor opened the match by winning the singles point. Nina Secerbegovic and Kasia Siwosz rolled over Wiveca Swarting and Maria Ring, 8-1, on court two, while Lenka Broosova and Jelena Stanivuk defeated Madeleine Geibert and Jana Albers, 8-2, on court one. On court three, Csilla Borsanyi and Zuzana Chmelarova fell to Mary Weatherholt and Jennifer Holmberg, 8-5.
In singles action, Secerbegovic was first off the court with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Swarting on court four. Siwosz followed with another 6-1, 6-1 win over Stephanie Evans on court five. The Lady Bears secured the win on court two as No. 39 Stanivuk downed Weatherholt, 6-2, 6-1.
No. 35 Broosova won a third-set super tiebreaker, 6-3, 2-6, 14-12, over Geibert on court one, while No. 66 Borsanyi defeated Albers, 6-4, 6-2, on court three. After losing a first-set tiebreaker, Karolina Filipiak rallied for a 6-7 (4), 6-1, 10-5 win on court six.
"With Nebraska, we always have had some good matches with them," said Scrivano. "They definitely made us raise our level as the day went on. I really like the way we played at one and two doubles. At three doubles, Nebraska just did a good job of out-competing us. In singles there were some really tough matches. Lenka was really pushed to the max. I felt like today was a good experience for our team. We gain a lot of confidence from two matches like today."
Baylor returns to action next weekend as the Lady Bears travel to face Colorado on Saturday and Missouri on Sunday. Both matches are scheduled to begin at noon. Baylor's match against TCU, originally scheduled for March 25, has been rescheduled for April 17 at 5 p.m. in Fort Worth.
