TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - Despite 15 strikeouts from Whitney Canion, a passed ball with the bases loaded in the bottom of the eighth allowed the winning run to score, as No. 24 Baylor fell to No. 1 Washington 1-0 in game one Friday at the Alabama Softball Complex. The Lady Bears (18-5 overall) dropped game two, 12-1 against No. 11 Georgia.
Canion's 15 strikeouts were one short of her career high, which was set in a 10 inning game against Sam Houston State. The losses broke Baylor's 12-game win streak.
After allowing a hit in the first, Canion allowed just two hits until the bottom of the eighth, as the Huskies mounted three hits to load the bases. With two outs, a passed ball got away, allowing the runner to score, giving the Huskies the 1-0 win.
Baylor looked to be in control most of the game, but BU left eight runners on base, unable to drive in the go-ahead run.
The Lady Bears had runners at second and third with one out in the top of the second, as Alex Colyer and Nicole Wesley led off the inning with singles. Megan Turk's sacrafice bunt moved both runners over, but the next two Baylor batters were unable to drive them in.
Colyer's double and N. Wesley's single led off the fourth, but with one out, the Lady Bears could not advance Colyer from third and Wesley from second, stranding the duo again. Baylor found itself with the bases loaded and one out in the fifth, but again, could not drive anyone home, as a strikeout and force out ended the inning.
Canion (10-3) went 7.2 innings, allowing seven hits, one unearned run, no walks and 15 strikeouts.
Game Two
Baylor fell behind 3-0 heading into the bottom of the second, but a Bree Hanafin solo shot to center pulled the Lady Bears within two.
Georgia answered with seven runs on six hits in the third to put the game away, as Baylor managed just one hit the rest of the way.
Shaina Brock (5-2) took the loss, lasting just one inning and giving up three hits, three runs and one strikeout.
Baylor will continue play at the Easton SEC/Pac 10/Big 12 Challenge on Saturday, taking on No. 1 Alabama at 4:00 p.m. and No. 11 Georgia at 6:30 p.m.
