COLLEGE STATION, Texas - Jelena Stanivuk helped clinch the doubles point and rolled through her singles match as the fifth-ranked Baylor women's tennis team defeated No. 35 Texas A&M, 6-1, on Wednesday night at the George P. Mitchell Tennis Center.
With the win, Baylor improves to 17-4 overall, 8-0 in Big 12 play. The Lady Bears maintain the top position in conference play, having dropped just four total points in league play.
"Overall I'm pleased with the way we played tonight," said head coach Joey Scrivano. "We came out very strong in a bunch of matches and stayed focused to the end. It's never easy to win convincingly on the road and especially in College Station. The Aggies have a good young team and they will be a force to be reckoned with in the future."
Baylor opened doubles play as eighth-ranked Lenka Broosova and Csilla Borsanyi rolled over Texas A&M's Janelle Cuthbertson and Christi Liles, 8-2, on court one. On court three, A&M's Sheri Olivier and Elze Potgieter defeated Nina Secerbegovic and Kasia Siwosz, 8-3, to even the point. On court two, No. 64 Taylor Ormond and Jelena Stanivuk split the first four games with Texas A&M's Stephanie Davidson and Morgan Frank. After a Baylor break to give the Lady Bears a 3-2 lead, the two teams held serve the remainder of the match, with Stanivuk serving up an ace on match point to win, 8-6, and secure the doubles point.
"We still have a lot of room for improvement," said Scrivano. "Our attitude at #3 doubles needs a lot of work. We just did not compete to our ability level today at that position."
Baylor extended its lead to 3-0 within an hour of starting singles play. No. 44 Stanivuk rolled over Liles, 6-1, 6-0, on court three in 48 minutes, while Secerbegovic won 12 of the last 13 games to record a 6-3, 6-0 win over Santacroce on court six.
Shortly after, Baylor clinched the match on court four as No. 64 Borsanyi dropped just two games en route to a 6-1, 6-1 win over Cuthbertson. Karolina Filipiak defeated Olivier, 6-4, 6-1, on court six to put Baylor up 5-0.
On court one, No. 46 Ormond and Potgieter split the first two sets, forcing a third-set super tiebreaker. Potgieter jumped out to an early 4-1 lead, but Ormond scored seven of the next eight points to take an 8-5 lead. With Ormond leading 9-6, Potgieter won the next five points to win the match, 2-6, 6-0, 11-9. No. 31 Broosova rolled over Frank, 6-4, 6-2, on court two.
