WOMEN'S TENNIS SET FOR BIG 12 CHAMPIONSHIPS
The fifth-ranked Baylor women's tennis team begins play this weekend at the 2009 Big 12 Women's Tennis Championships at the Headington Family Tennis Center in Norman, Okla. Baylor, the tournament's No. 1 overall seed, enters the championships with a perfect 11-0 record following a 4-0 win over No. 59 Colorado on Wednesday. The Lady Bears earned their fifth-straight Big 12 regular season championship, finishing undefeated in league play for the fourth time in the last five years. LAST TIME AT THE BIG 12 CHAMPIONSHIPS
On a windy overcast day, the top-seeded Baylor women's tennis claimed its third straight Big 12 Championship title by downing the University of Texas on Sunday at the George P. Mitchell Tennis Center at College Station, Texas. No. 3 Baylor's win over Texas raised its record to 28-2 while the No. 20 Longhorns, the tournament's No. 2 seed, falls to 18-6. The victory extended the Bears' win streak to 11 matches. The start of the match was delayed an hour and 15 minutes because of rain and due of the threat of inclement weather, the match began with singles competition. Since Baylor claimed four points in singles to post the victory, doubles were not contested. For the third straight day, Lenka Broosova and Zuzana Zemenova breezed through their matches to record victories. Broosova, ranked No. 17 drubbed Stephanie Davison, 6-0, 6-1, while No. 24 Zemenova downed 59th-ranked Vanja Corovic, 6-2, 6-3. In addition, Zemenova was named the tournament's most outstanding player. Jelena Stanivuk and No. 100 Jana Bielikova finished their matches within a minute of each other to produce the Baylor victory. Stanivuk downed Maggie Mello, 7-5, 6-1, while Bielikova triumphed over Caroline Larsson, 6-2, 7-5. Texas gained its only point of the day when Sarah Lancaster produced a win at No. 6 between the completion of Stanivuk and Bielkova's matches.

Csilla Borsanyi won 6-2, 6-0 at No. 3 singles as the fifth-ranked Baylor women's tennis team defeated No. 59 Colorado, 4-0, on Wednesday morning at the Headington Family Tennis Center. The Lady Bears finish Big 12 play with a perfect 11-0 record, securing their fifth-straight league regular season title. Baylor also finishes undefeated in conference play for the fourth time in the last five years. Over that time, Baylor holds a 54-1 record in Big 12 play. The match was originally scheduled for March 28 in Boulder, Colo., but snowy conditions forced the two teams to make up the match prior to the start of the Big 12 Women's Tennis Championships set to begin Thursday. Baylor, the No. 1 seed in the tournament, will have a first-round bye and will play its first tournament match on Friday. Baylor opened with two wins in doubles play. No. 11 Borsanyi and Lenka Broosova defeated Camila Belassi and Melisa Esposito, 8-4, on court one. No. 63 Taylor Ormond and Jelena Stanivuk rolled over Franziska Jendrian and Ania Anuszkiewicz, 8-4, on court two to secure the doubles point. Playing a tournament-style format, the Lady Bears finished its first three singles matches in straight sets to complete the 4-0 win. No. 32 Broosova was the first off the court with a 6-0, 6-0 win over Esposito, while No. 39 Ormond was up 6-1, 2-0 when Belassi retired. Borsanyi clinched the win on court three, while the Lady Bears were ahead one set in each of the three remaining singles matches.
