WACO - The Baylor softball team placed four players on the NFCA All-Central Region squad the National Fastpitch Coaches Association announced on Thursday. Brette Reagan, Tiffany Wesley, Whitney Canion and Kayce Walker each earned first-team honors. It marked the most Lady Bears to be named all-region since having five in 2006.
Reagan's selection marks the fourth-straight year she has been named to the all-region squad, and the third time she earned a first-team nod. The senior started 36 games and hit .359 with eight doubles, eight home runs and 28 RBI despite missing 21 games with a torn ACL.
Wesley earned her first all-region bid after having an outstanding year in left field. The junior is batting .335 with career highs in RBI with 24 and home runs with two. The Lady Bears' leadoff batter has been perfect in stolen bases, going 24-24 and has not made an error in left field this season.
Canion finished up one of the best seasons in Baylor softball history, as the freshman lefty set new records in season strikeouts and most 10-plus strikeout games in a career. She is 24-16 with a 1.76 ERA, registering 10 shutouts and 393 strikeouts. She not only led the league in strikeouts, but is third in the NCAA.
Walker, who tore her ACL on April 22 against Texas, finished her freshman campaign with a team-leading .413 average to go with four doubles, two triples and 23 stolen bases. The freshman finished second in the league in batting average and hits, and went errorless in right field throughout the year.
The all-region teams were chosen by NFCA member coaches from each region, and all the honorees will now be eligible for selection to the Louisville Slugger/NFCA All-America first, second or third teams. In addition, conference pitchers and players of the year not selected to the regional teams were added for All-America consideration
