Recap | Box Score

Coach Steve Smith

On the game

"I don't think there is that big of difference in the clubs. We are not playing very well and they are playing very well. I won't take anything away from their pitching. I think their pitching is outstanding. I mean I think it is outstanding. Everybody that has walked out there when it matter they were very, very good. But that is what the league is about. I feel good about the guys we send out there too. We just have not matched them. We just have not matched them on the mound."

On Aaron Miller's performance

"I may be asking too much of this guy. I just wonder: it is hot now. It is humid. I just think he ran out of gas. It is hard to say that after one inning, but it was similar to last week. I went into this year thinking his role would be out of the bullpen. The thing that changed my mind on that was the eight innings he gave us against Missouri and how strong he was and how he maintained it. We certainly need to go back and rethink that one a little bit now that maybe (Shawn) Tolleson is back. Hopefully Willie (Kempf) can pitch well for us tomorrow. We have capable guys, they just haven't performed."

On the difficulty of the loss

"I will tell you what the difficulty of it is. It is 15 years. As a coach unfortunately every year stands alone. For the first eight years we won this series. Ten years ago we won a game 20-4 in Austin. What you are constantly reminded of on a night like this is that every year stands alone pretty much in everybody else's mind. I was proud of our fans tonight. I really was. I thought this is brutal. This is brutally ugly. Texas always travels well. They got a good crowd over there, just hooting and hollering having a big ole time over there in our house. It is tough on our fans. It is tough on our players and our parents. But I thought our people seemed to handle it pretty well. They stuck with us and I thought we showed a lot of class in that and I was proud of that."

On the way his club finished the game

"It is good for those guys. You are going to pinch-hit (Kenton) Gedwed sometime here later. You are going to have to play some of those guys that haven't been in that situation. I was proud to see (Drew) Bias get up there and compete like he did. All of the seniors had a part. (Brooks) Kimmey got out there, so they all had some part in it. The only way this game was going to stay a game was if Shawn (Tolleson) could go out there and put a bunch of zeroes up and we could kind of chip away and get back in it and he was not able to do that."

Junior catcher Gregg Glime

On where the club goes from here

"We are too good of a team for this to keep happening. I think the biggest thing is we are still playing hard. This hurts everybody. It is not fine with anybody. It is going to change around. We are too good of a team for this to keep happening. We don't wash our socks or something to change something up to win."

On the outcome of the game

"Ninth inning we did not give up. At least we went out on a positive note. I think they are a good team. I think the rankings show that. They got good pitching. They got good hitting. They are not better than us and hopefully we can show that sooner or later.

On his homerun that got Baylor on the scoreboard

"With our team I don't think we are ever down. Maybe when we are 14 or 15 runs down that is a little different story. Four or five runs is not much for this team. Everybody up and down the lineup can put the ball out the park. I don't think we feel we are close to being out of the ball game when we are four runs down."

On the rest of the season

"It slipped away from our initial goals. We wanted to win a Big 12 championship and now that might not be possible. We got bigger and better things: a regional, a super regional and College World Series. That is still our goals. That hasn't slipped away yet and I don't assume that is going to slip away anytime soon."
