WACO, Texas - Two Baylor student-athletes earned ESPN The Magazine Men's At-Large Academic All-District VI honors, the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) announced Thursday. Tennis' Dominik Mueller and golf's Bill Allcorn and earned first team honors. Mueller and Allcorn are now eligible for Academic All-America honors; that team is announced in early June.
At-Large selection covers the states of Mississippi, Louisiana, Arkansas, Texas, Oklahoma and New Mexico and includes 12 different sports. To be eligible for Academic All-America status, a student-athlete must be a varsity starter or key reserve, maintain a cumulative GPA of at least 3.20 on a 4.00 scale and have reached sophomore standing both academically and athletically.
Mueller, a junior finance major from Frankfurt, Germany, plays at No. 3 and 4 singles for the sixth-ranked Baylor squad. In 2008-09 he posted a 25-11 record in singles including a 21-7 mark in dual match competition. In addition, he was 15-8 in doubles and 14-6 in dual matches. Mueller ranks No. 9 all-time on Baylor's career singles list with 96 victories and is No. 7 (.768) all-time on BU's career singles winning percentage. He has earned Dean's List recognition every semester, is a two-time Academic All-Big 12 selection and has been named to the Big 12 Commissioner's Honor Roll every semester.
Muller becomes the fourth men's tennis player to be honored by CoSIDA, joining former Bears Mark Williams, Benjamin Becker and Michal Kokta. Williams earned Academic All-American honors in 2000 and 2001 while Becker was an All-District second team selection in 2004 and Kokta was a first team pick in 2006 and earned Academic All-American honors that same season.
Allcorn, a senior from Abilene, Texas, finished second at 2009 Big 12 Championship, earning All-Tournament honors. On the season, he posted five top-10 and three top-5 finishes. Allcorn carded a career-low 54-hole score of 209 at Big 12 Championship and led the Bears this season with 73.11 stroke average and 1.69 score vs. par. The business major is a four-time first-team Academic All-Big 12 selection and a two-time Cleveland Golf All-America Scholar. In addition, he has been named to the Big 12 Commissioner's Honor Roll each semester.
