WACO, Texas - Three Baylor baseball student-athletes earned ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District VI honors, the College Sports Information Directors of America announced Thursday. Shaver Hansen, Aaron Miller and Kendal Volz all were named first team. Baylor was the only school with three first-team selections.
Miller earned first-team honors for the second consecutive season; Hansen was a second-team selection last year. This marks the fourth consecutive year in which at least two Baylor student-athletes have earned academic all-district honors. Miller joins Jason Jennings (1998, 1999), Jon Topolski (1998, 1999) and Ross Bennett (2002, 2003) as the only Bears to earn first-team academic all-district honors twice.
By virtue of their first-team all-district selections, Hansen, Miller and Volz are eligible for Academic All-America honors. Baylor's last baseball Academic All-American was Zach Dillon in 2006.
Hansen is a junior economics and finance double-major from Grand Junction, Colo. He is hitting .330 with 15 home runs, 48 RBI, 10 doubles and four stolen bases this season. Hansen leads the Bears in home runs and RBI, and he ranks fourth nationally in home runs among shortstops.
Miller is a junior management and entrepreneurship double-major from Channelview, Texas. He is second on the team in batting average (.350), home runs (11) and RBI (43). Miller also is 3-3 with two saves and a 4.95 ERA on the mound this season.
Volz, one of only two pitchers on the first team, is a junior finance and real estate double-major from Bulverde, Texas. He is 3-5 with a staff-low 4.00 ERA and 71 strikeouts over 74.1 innings. Volz is four strikeouts shy of cracking Baylor's career top-10 list.
Baylor returns to action Tuesday, May 12, hosting Stephen F. Austin for a 6:30 p.m. CDT first pitch at Baylor Ballpark in the final home game of the regular season. The Bears conclude the regular season next weekend with a three-game Big 12 Conference series at Nebraska.
