WACO, Texas - Baylor's women's tennis will open the season with five players ranked in singles, as well as two tandems ranked in doubles, as they prepare for their season opener in Midland, Texas, at the Midland Racquet Club Invitational Sept. 18-20.
"It's exciting to see our team's hard work show up in the rankings," head coach Joey Scrivano said. "However, the key for us is to continue to focus on skill development and just trying to improve each day. That's all that matters."
The Bears return the bulk of their core from a team that finished with a 27-5 record and an appearance in the NCAA Quarterfinals, including their fourth-straight Big 12 conference title. Baylor will start the season with five ranked singles players, including preseason No. 23 Lenka Broosova, No. 31 Jelena Stanivuk, No. 32 Taylor Ormond, No. 48 Csilla Borsanyi, and No. 92 Nina Secerbegovic.
Coming off a semifinal appearance in the NCAA Doubles Championships last season, Broosova and Borsanyi begin the season preseason-ranked No. 8 in the nation. Ormond and Stanivuk, the Bears other formidable doubles tandem, begins the season ranked No. 22 in the nation.
Broosova, who ended the 2008-09 season with a No. 35 national ranking, finished the year at 31-7 overall, including a 26-3 mark in dual matches. She also tallied a 10-5 record against ranked opponents and finished the season with a 19-match winning streak in dual matches.
Borsanyi earned a No. 68 ranking in the final standings after finishing the season with a 32-11 overall record, including 22-6 in dual match play. Borsanyi led the team with a 10-0 record in Big 12 play and tallied six wins against ranked opponents.
Stanivuk was ranked No. 47 in the final rankings after compiling a 34-7 overall record, including a 25-2 mark in dual matches. Her current dual-match win streak sits at 17 straight wins. Stanivuk finished the season with a 10-5 record against ranked opponents.
Ormond followed Stanivuk with a No. 48 national ranking at the end of the 2008-09 season, following a 27-23 sophomore campaign, including a 13-15 record in dual matches. Ormond tallied a team-high 14 wins against ranked opponents.
Mid-term freshman Secerbegovic made her debut in the Campbell's/ITA rankings with a No. 123 ranking to finish the season. Secerbegovic tallied a 24-3 record overall, including a 24-1 mark in dual matches. She finished the season with a 21-match winning streak, all in dual matches.
