Baylor returns to action Saturday, Sept. 19, hosting the University of Connecticut for a non-conference game at Floyd Casey Stadium. Kickoff is scheduled for 4:05 p.m. CDT. This is the 2009 home opener for the Bears, who were 4-3 at home last season. This marks the second consecutive season Baylor and Connecticut have played each other on Sept. 19.
The Bears (1-0) opened the season Sept. 5 with a 24-21 victory at Wake Forest, snapping a nine-game road losing streak and posting their first road win against a non-conference BCS opponent since 1995. Baylor is among teams receiving votes in both national polls this week.
The Huskies (1-1) dropped a 12-10 decision at 19th-ranked North Carolina last Saturday, a game decided by a safety in the waning minutes. Connecticut opened its 2009 season Sept. 5 with a 23-16 victory at Ohio.
All Baylor football games are broadcast live on the Baylor/ISP Sports Radio Network; Waco's 1660 ESPN Radio is the network's flagship station. Live streaming audio and GameTracker also are available for all Baylor football games online at www.BaylorBears.com, the official website of Baylor Athletics and a member of the CBS College Sports network. Live streaming video also is available on a delayed basis for all non-televised home games.
BAYLOR-CONNECTICUT SERIES
Baylor and Connecticut meet for only the second time in varsity football action Saturday. The Huskies were 31-28 winners at Rentschler Field in East Hartford, Conn., last season. It was a back-and-forth affair in which neither team led by more than a touchdown all night. Connecticut scored a touchdown just shy of the six-minute mark in the fourth quarter to take the lead for good at 31-28. Baylor had one final shot, but Robert Griffin's fourth-down pass at the UConn 39 with 54 seconds remaining sailed just past Kendall Wright down the left sideline.
BAYLOR vs. BIG EAST CONFERENCE FOES
Baylor is 5-4 all-time against teams currently playing football as Big East Conference members. The Bears are 2-2 against Pittsburgh, 1-1 against Syracuse, 1-0 against Louisville, 1-0 against South Florida and 0-1 against Connecticut.
This marks the first time a Big East Conference member program has played at Floyd Casey Stadium since Sept. 26, 1970, when the Pittsburgh Panthers defeated the Bears 15-10. Baylor is 2-2 all-time at home against current Big East programs; that record includes a win over South Florida prior to that program's inclusion in the Big East.
HOME OPENERS
Baylor is 78-24-5 all-time in home openers, including a 40-19 mark since moving to Floyd Casey Stadium in 1950. The Bears have won three of their last five home openers and are 5-3 in such games since 2001.
BAYLOR AMONG TEAMS RECEIVING VOTES IN AP TOP 25
Baylor received 15 total points in this week's Associated Press Top 25, falling among teams also receiving votes for the national ranking for the second consecutive week. The Bears' 15 total points ranks 11th among teams also receiving votes.
The last time Baylor appeared in the AP Top 25 at No. 24 the second week of the 1993 season after knocking off 25th-ranked Fresno State 42-39 in the season opener.
BEARS SNAP SEVERAL STREAKS WITH WIN AT WAKE FOREST
Baylor's 24-21 victory Sept. 5 at Wake Forest put the breaks on several skids for the Bears. It was the program's first road win since a Sept. 22, 2007, victory at Buffalo, snapping a nine-game slide. It also was Baylor's first road win over a non-conference BCS opponent since winning at North Carolina State in 1995, snapping a seven-game losing streak in that category.
In fact, the last time the Bears opened a season with a road win against a current BCS program was 1965 when Baylor posted a 14-8 victory at Auburn. The Bears are 5-15 all-time in such games and had lost 13 consecutive such games prior to the win at Wake Forest.
Furthermore, it snapped a three-game losing streak in season openers regardless of opponent. It also marked the first time since the Sept. 8, 2007, game against Rice that Baylor won despite allowing the opponent to rush for 100 yards, snapping a 14-game slump in such games.
