MIDLAND, Texas - Baylor's Jelena Stanivuk led the way at the season-opening Midland Racquet Club Invitational with a second-round win on the first day of action in Midland, Texas.
Stanivuk, who is one of the top eight seeds, received a first-round bye, then rallied from down a set to beat Texas Tech's Natalie Leitch. After losing the first set, 6-2, Stanivuk took over the match winning the second set by a score of 6-0 and the third set 10-2.
Baylor's only two other competitors in the tournament, Karolina Filipiak and Carla Lindlar, each won their first-round match, but fell in the second round. Filipiak beat North Texas' Paula Dinuta by a score of 6-1, 4-6, 6-3, but lost to Nebraska's Madeline Geibert 6-1, 4-6, 10-8.
In Lindlar's first-round match, she beat Kerryin Potgeiter of Texas Tech, before falling to Rice's Julia Chao, 6-1, 6-2.
Filipiak and Lindlar, who are paired up in the doubles portion of the tournament, are one of the top four seeds, receiving a first-round bye.
Second-round doubles action and third-round singles action continues on Saturday at the Midland Racquet Club.
