WACO, Texas - Senior Karolina Filipiak and junior Sona Novakova each won three-set matches to advance to the Round of 32 on the first day of action at the USTA/ITA Texas Regional on Friday in Waco, Texas.

In her first match of the day, Filipiak took down Houston's Joanna Kacprzyk in straight sets in first-round action of the 128-player singles field. Filipiak won the first set 6-3, then dominated the second set 6-1. The senior's big performance of the day came in her second match against Texas' Amanda Craddock. After dropping the first set 6-4, Filipiak got a break in each of the next two sets to win them 6-4 , 6-4 and move on to the Round of 32.

The fourth-seeded Novakova faced North Texas' Nadia Lee in the second round, after receiving a first-round bye. Novakova took the first set 6-4, but Lee bounced back in the second to win 6-1. In the third set, Novakova returned the favor with 6-1 win to advance.

"Karo is definitely the highlight of the day, coming back from a set down," head coach Joey Scrivano said. "It was a really gutsy performance. I am really proud of the way she handled herself on the court. Sona also found a way to win, despite facing a hot opponent and some tough wind conditions."

Freshmen Cristina Danaila and Aya Bara each suffered first-round losses, moving to the consolation bracket. Danaila was beat by Texas' Cierra Gayton-Leach in straight sets, 7-5, 6-2, while Bara was defeated by UTSA's Isabelle Johnson, 6-1, 7-5.

Play will continue on Saturday, Oct. 23, with one round of singles and two rounds of doubles at the Baylor Tennis Center. In addition to the four singles players, Baylor will have two doubles tandems on the court, with Novakova teaming with Nina Secerbegovic, and Danaila and Filipiak joining forces.
