MADISON, Wis. - No. 5 Baylor women's tennis advanced to the quarterfinal round of the ITA National Team Indoor with a 5-2 win over No. 21 Florida State in the first round on Friday morning at the A.C. Nielsen Tennis Stadium in Madison, Wis.
The Lady Bears kicked the match off on the right foot sweeping all three doubles matches in convincing fashion. The No. 13 duo of Lenka Broosova and Csilla Borsanyi picked up an 8-5 victory, while Taylor Ormond and Carla Lindlar matched it with an 8-5 victory as well. At No. 3 doubles, Nina Secerbegovic and Karolina Filipiak held on for an 8-7 victory.
"We are definitely progressing in doubles, and it was great to see all three win today," Scrivano said. "I was especially pleased with the way Taylor and Carla played at No. 2. They just continue to get better."
Ormond gave the Bears a 2-0 lead in team points with a straight-sets win at No. 4 singles over FSU's Federica Suess 6-4, 6-2. The Seminoles didn't fold at that point, picking up two consecutive singles wins at the No. 2 and No. 6 positions. However, Baylor's all-time wins leader No. 17 Broosova, gutted out a 7-6, 6-3 win, while veterans Secerbegovic and Filipiak each recorded dominating wins.
"Taylor has made the biggest improvement since the Miami match," Scrivano said. "She has made some nice adjustments, and that is all you can really ask for as a coach. It really helped us against a team like Florida State."
Filipiak secured the match victory, dropping just two games on her way to a 6-1, 6-1 win, while Secerbegovic, ranked No. 24, won 7-5, 6-2.
"At this level, every team you play is going to fight back and its just a matter of how you respond," Scrivano said. " Today, Lenka and Nina both found a way to fight off a little adversity and cool off their opponents. Momentum was starting to swing in Florida State's favor, but they were able to stop that. It was a big key to our overall match today.
Baylor (4-0) will face No. 11 North Carolina (8-0) in Saturday's quarterfinal round at 3:30 p.m. UNC pulled the upset of No. 4 Georgia by a score of 5-2 in its first-round match. The Tar Heels strength comes in the form of their three ranked doubles tandems, including No. 6 Sanaz Marand and Sophie Grabinski, No. 22 Katrina Tsang and Shinann Featherston, and No. 28 Haley Hemm and Jocelyn Ffriend. In singles for North Carolina, Marand is ranked 25th, while Tsang checks in at No. 100.
The Tar Heels have defeated five ranked teams so far this season, including four in the top 35. Along with today's victory over No. 4 Georgia, UNC also boast wins over No. 6 Notre Dame, No. 28 Kentucky, and No. 33 Boise State.
