WACO, Texas - Baylor's fifth-ranked women's tennis team will host the 35th-ranked Pepperdine Waves at 2 p.m. on Saturday at the Baylor Tennis Center.
The Lady Bears enter the weekend after a 2-1 showing at the ITA National Team Indoor Championships in Madison, Wis. Baylor took down No. 21 Florida State in the opening round, 5-2, but then fell 4-2 to then-No. 11 North Carolina. UNC played their way into the final before losing to then-No. 2 Northwestern. The Tar Heels have since moved up to No. 2. The Lady Bears then played on consolation match, taking down No. 8 USC by a score of 5-2.
After rallying to upset eighth-ranked Maria Sanchez of USC in a three-setter that clinched the Lady Bears' 5-2 win over the Trojans in last week's ITA National Team Indoor Championship, senior All-American Lenka Broosova moved up eight spots to No. 9 in the ITA national rankings that were released Thursday. Broosova is 11-4 overall this year and 4-0 in dual matches and Baylor's all-time leader with 131 career singles victories. Sophomore Nina Secerbegovic is 25th, followed by junior Taylor Ormond (91st), senior Csilla Borsanyi (105th) and junior Jelena Stanivuk (123rd), who's been out this spring with an Achilles' heel injury. In doubles, 2009 NCAA semifinalists Broosova and Borsanyi are ranked 12th.
Pepperdine, led by 33rd-year head coach Gualberto Escudero,Waves started the year 0-2, but have since reeled off three of the last four matches and enter the weekend with a 3-3 record. Pepperdine has just one player ranked in the ITA with Ali Walters checking in at No. 98.
