CORAL GABLES, Fla. - Despite a 3-1 deficit, the fifth-ranked Baylor fought back with a record-breaking performance from Lenka Broosova to defeat sixth-ranked Miami in Coral Gables, Fla.
Baylor faced a deficit of nearly insurmountable odds, which at one point was a 3-1 Miami. With the two-point advantage, Miami was leading two of the other three matches still in play. That's when Baylor's two-highest ranked players, No. 17 Broosova and No. 24 Nina Secerbegovic, along with freshman Carla Lindlar stepped up.
"This was just a really impressive win for us," head coach Joey Scrivano said. "We showed a lot of fight. It was a real tug of war. We won the doubles point and then we had to fight back when we were down 3-1 after the first three singles matches. But, I am thankful that we have the type of players that can battle back against a great team on the road. It really shows the character of our team."
Broosova and Secerbegovic each dropped their first set, but battled back to earn at least one break point in each of their next two sets to win. Broosova's victory, maybe the finest of her fantastic Baylor career, came when Baylor needed it most. She took down one of the best players in the nation in seventh-ranked Laura Vallverdu to earn her 128th career singles victory. Entering the dual match season tied for the all-time Baylor lead, Broosova hadn't gotten to finish either of her matches against Brown and Harvard last week, but she finished with a flurry to break Katja Kovac's record of 127.
"I don't know if there is a better way to get the record," Scrivano said. "Her team needed her more than ever and she came through. It's as big of a win as he has ever had in her career."
In another one of BU's great efforts on the afternoon, Lindlar was leading her match after taking a 6-0 first set, but Miami senior Claudia Wasilewski took the second set 6-4. The newcomer rallied in the third in dominating fashion, winning the set 6-2 and bring the overall team score to 3-2.
"This was Carla's first big dual match on the road, and she played great," Scrivano said. "To beat a player like that on road means a lot to us. She has grown up in a short amount of time, and if we can rely on her that is a really good sign for our team. "
Baylor won the doubles point against the Hurricanes, getting victories from the No. 13 duo of Broosova and Csilla Borsanyi, as well as Secerbegovic and Karolina Filipiak. Broosova and Borsanyi faced the No. 3 pairing of Vallverdu and Gabriella Mejia, but found their stroke and took an 8-5 win. Secerbegovic and Filipiak went down to the wire in their match against Wasilewski and Danielle Mills, managing a 9-8 win.
Baylor will be back in action next weekend at the ITA National Team Indoor Championships in Madison, Wis., from Feb. 12-15. The Lady Bears will take on No. 22 Florida State in the first round. The match is slated for 9 a.m. on Friday, Feb. 12.
