LOS ANGELES - Despite dropping the doubles point, the ninth-ranked Lady Bears out-dueled the No. 2 UCLA Bruins on the singles courts to take a 4-3 win on the road on Wednesday in Los Angeles, Calif.

"Yesterday was a huge win for our program, but for us to bounce back and beat an even stronger team today was really impressive," head coach Joey Scrivano. "I am really proud of the way our team played. UCLA just came out and took care of business in doubles, but the ladies just didn't let that influence the rest of the match. They were composed and played singles with a lot of confidence."

After UCLA lost just two games at No. 1 and No. 2 on the doubles court, Baylor had its work cut out to against the second-ranked team in the nation. The Lady Bears found a little momentum with a win at No. 3 doubles from Nina Secerbegovic and Jelena Stanivuk. The duo beat Pamela Montez and Carling Seguso by a score of 8-6.

Baylor then took quick first sets at No. 2, No. 3, and No. 5 singles to fully seize all momentum No. 41 Secerbegovic made quick work of 34th-ranked Andrea Remynse with a 6-3, 6-1 victory for her 11th consecutive win to open the dual-match season. At No. 5, Karolina Filipiak followed suit with a 6-0, 6-4 win to tie the score at 2-2.

"Nina has been the most consistent player on our team over the last two years," Scrivano said. "She just puts points on the board for us. And for Karolina to go out and win decisively was a big key for us. It really shows the direction that her game is going."

After that, Baylor had to fight through in two three-set matches at No. 1 and No. 3. On the first court, No. 8 Lenka Broosova dropped the first set 6-4, but dominated the next two sets winning 6-2, 6-2. On court three, No. 98 Taylor Ormond traded 6-2 sets with No. 37 Noelle Hickey, then found herself down 3-0 in the deciding set. With her back to the wall, Ormond reeled off six consecutive games to take the set 6-3 and clinch the win in dramatic fashion for Baylor.

"Lenka did a fantastic job of fighting off a very hot player in Yasmin Schnack," Scrivano said. "I don't think we have ever beaten Schnack, but Lenka just battled for three sets. She is the heart and soul of our team. Then TO really buckled down in that third set. She did a great job of using her serve and her forehand to dictate the match from 3-0 down."

The Lady Bears will battle their third top 15 opponent of the week, and second top five opponents when they take on No. 4 North Carolina at the Baylor Tennis Center on Saturday, March 13 at noon.
