"I was disappointed in our offense today," head coach Glenn Moore said. "We need to do a better job than that, and conference play starts this weekend. We will go back to work over the next two days and shore up some things to get ready."
Game One
SHSU 4, No. 23 BU 0
Sam Houston State's senior pitcher Morgan Mikulin (8-12) threw a complete-game shutout, allowing four hits and striking out four to lead Sam Houston State to a 4-0 win over Baylor in game one.
The shutout was the first since a 1-0 loss on May 9, 2009 against Missouri at the Big 12 Tournament. It marked the first non-conference game BU was shutout in since a 9-0 loss to Georgia on March 7, 2009 in Tuscaloosa, Ala.
Courtney Repka (11-5) took the loss, going 6.0 innings, allowing five hits, four runs, two earned, four walks and four strikeouts.
The Lady Bears' offense only managed four hits in the game, two coming off the bat of Bree Hanafin.
The Bearkats got things going in the bottom of the third, scoring three runs on just one hit, as Repka walked the bases loaded with one out. That brought up Amy Brown, who singled up the middle and off the glove of Dani Leal, allowing a pair of runs to score and putting runners at second and third. A sac fly from Mikulin scored Erin Burford to make it 3-0 after three.
Baylor loaded the bases in the fourth, as Vannatta led off being hit by a pitch and advanced to second on a single from Courtney Nieten. With one out, Kayce Walker reached on an error by the third baseman to load the bases, but the Lady Bears couldn't bring any runners around, keeping the game scoreless.
SHSU added another run in the fourth after runners reached on a single and double to put runners at second and third, while a walk loaded the bases. Hailey Wiginton hit a grounder up the middle that was gloved by KJ Freeland for the out at second, but Kim Damian came in to score for a four-run advantage.
Game Two
No. 23 BU 4, SHSU 2
Nicole Wesley went 3-for-4 with a stolen base as Baylor bounced back for a 4-2 victory in game two.
Repka (12-5) got the win, throwing 7.0 innings, allowing five hits, two runs, one earned, three walks and four strikeouts.
Courtney Nieten got the Lady Bears on the board in the top of the fourth, launching a solo shot to center field for a 1-0 lead.
Sam Houston State tied the game in the bottom of the fourth, as a pair of singles and a walk loaded the bases, allowing Damian to ground a ball off the glove of Repka to Kathy Shelton at second, who fired over to first for the out, allowing Nowak to score from third.
Baylor busted the game open with three runs in the fifth, as Kayce Walker led off the inning with a single. Shelton followed with a double down the left field line, putting runners at second and third, allowing Kelsi Kettler to deliver an RBI-single for a 2-1 lead. Mallory Craig pinch ran for Kettler and stole second, forcing a throw down and allowing Shelton to score from third, and then advanced to third when the throw back home got away. Sydney Wilson stepped in and hit a sac fly to center, scoring Craig for the three-run lead.
The Bearkats loaded the bases and scored a run in the bottom of the seventh, but Repka got three-straight outs for the victory.
The Lady Bears will open conference play on Saturday, March 27 at 2:00 p.m. at No. 15 Oklahoma State. The two teams will meet again Sunday for a showdown at 1:00 p.m.
