LINCOLN - In a battle of Big 12 unbeatens, Baylor's top-ranked women's tennis team (18-2, 6-0) continued its impressive run with a 6-1 win over Nebraska (17-3, 6-1) on Sunday in Lincoln. The win marked the 40th in a row over Big 12 opponents and moved the Lady Bears winning streak to 12 matches.
The Lady Bears swept the doubles matches, then ripped off five of six singles matches on their way to a convincing win over Nebraska, continuing a string of Big 12 regular season and tournament wins that began during the 2007 season.
"Nebraska has a good team and with a solid line up from 1 through 6, without question they are an NCAA tournament team," head coach Joey Scrivano said.
Baylor's 12th-ranked doubles tandem of Lenka Broosova and Csilla Borsanyi cruised easily to an 8-1 win to set the tone for the entire match. Nina Secerbegovic and Jelena Stanivuk took an 8-6 win at No. 2 for their eighth consecutive win, while Carla Lindlar and Taylor Ormond posted an 8-5 win.
"Carla made a positive impact at No. 3 doubles today. She was the best player on the court and made the difference," Scrivano said. "Our seniors Lenka and Csilla took care of business in singles and doubles. They were impressive from start to finish."
In singles, Baylor posted three quick wins at Nos. 4, 2, and 1, losing no more than four games in any match. No. 97 Csilla Borsanyi finished first with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Stefanie Weinstein, followed No. 16 Nina Secerbegovic's 6-2, 6-2 win over No. 75 Mary Weatherholt. Broosova then put up the clinching point for the Lady Bears with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Madeleine Geibert.
The Lady Bears' Karolina Filipiak then won her third consecutive match in straight sets with a 6-2, 7-5 win over Janine Weinrich, coming back from down 4-0 in the second set. Meanwhile, No. 59 Taylor Ormond fought back from down a set to win a tiebreaker in the second set and take the match in third-set super tiebreaker.
"I like the way Nina bounced back from a tough loss on Friday. She played within herself and with a lot of composure today," Scrivano said. "Karo did an outstanding job of fighting back from 0-4 in the second set and closing out the match in straight sets."
Baylor will be back on the court on Wednesday against Big 12 rival No. 41 Texas A&M. The match is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m. at the Baylor Tennis Center. Follow live scoring on www.BaylorBears.com.
