WACO, Texas - Baylor's second-ranked women's tennis team won five of six singles matches for their 48th consecutive win over Big 12 competition in a 6-1 route of No. 34 Texas A&M on Wednesday night at the Baylor Tennis Center.
The Lady Bears took two of the three doubles matches with wins at No. 1 and No. 2, then came out firing with three singles points to put the match in the win column. With the Aggies leading the final three courts by one set each, it looked as if the score would be close, but super tie-breaker wins at No. 3 and No. 6 gave the Lady Bears a convincing victory.
"It's always a big match when you play your in-state rival," head coach Joey Scrivano said. "I love the way we were self-motivated tonight. The coaching staff didn't have to motivate them, they came out ready to play. This is a really good, they are a good team all the way through singles and doubles."
With a late lineup switch, each of the final three spots in the Baylor lineup moved up a position, while Carla Lindlar moved into the No. 6 spot. Baylor went on to win all four spots in the lineup that changed just before singles play began for the evening.
At No. 4 Jelena Stanivuk made quick work of Texas A&M lefty Sheri Olivier with a dominating 6-2, 6-1 victory. Fifth-ranked Lenka Broosova followed suit at No. 1 with a 6-3, 6-4 win over No. 65 Elze Potgieter. Broosova won the final three games on the first set, then the final two of the second set to close match.
Meanwhile, with a 3-0 lead, Karolina Filipiak fought back from a 5-3 first-set deficit to win 7-5, then gave up the first game of the second set before blowing away Lauren Santracroce 6-1 in the second. Filipiak's win sealed the team win for the Lady Bears.
"Karo is definitely our most improved player," Scrivano said. "She has always been a great fighter, and I am just proud of her effort tonight. That was really the turning point of the match. It got the momentum in our favor."
The final two matches of the night were played to super tie-breakers on courts No. 3 and 6. At No. 3, 106th-ranked Csilla Borsanyi went right down to the wire with No. 109 Morgan Frank in a 6-4, 2-6, 1-0 (10-8) win to give Borsanyi a current team-best five-match win streak. At No. 6, Lindlar fought back after losing the first set 6-2 to win a 7-6 (7-2) tiebreak in the second set. Then in the third, Lindlar took advantage of mistakes by Christi Liles and finished her off 10-5.
In doubles, Baylor got wins at No. 1 and No. 2, with each continuing impressive win streaks. On court two, Stanivuk and Nina Secerbegovic won their ninth consecutive match with an 8-4 victory. Meanwhile, the 10th-ranked duo of Broosova and Borsanyi won their third-straight match 8-5.
The Lady Bears have two matches left on the week, both at the Baylor Tennis Center. On Friday, the Lady Bears will play host to Missouri (1-6, 6-12) at 5 p.m., then take on No. 63 Colorado (10-8, 3-4) on Sunday at 1 p.m.
