The No. 24 Baylor softball team (20-10, 1-2) will remain home to take on Texas Tech (29-5, 1-1) in a two-game series beginning on Saturday at 2:00 p.m. and wrapping up Monday, April 5 at 5:00 p.m.
Prior to Saturday's game, a pair of Baylor's former All-Americans will be honored, as Ashley Monceaux and Harmony Schwethelm return to to Getterman Stadium.
In addition, following Saturday's game, an Easter Egg hunt for kids will be held on the field.
SCOUTING TEXAS TECH
The Red Raiders have dropped two of their last three, splitting a home series with Iowa State last weekend, and are playing just their second true road game of the season. Tech is off to its best start in program history and leads the Big 12 Conference with a .342 batting average. Emily Bledsoe leads the TTU offense with a .424 average, 13 doubles and eight stolen bases, while freshman Mikey Kinney has brought power with 12 home runs and 33 RBI. Ashly Jacobs has been great in the circle, leading the conference with a 0.91 ERA to go with an 11-1 record.
SERIES
Baylor swept Tech in Lubbock last season, however, the Red Raiders earned the sweep their last time in Waco. The Lady Bears lead the all-time series 32-10 and 12-6 in Waco.
HOME SWEET HOME
BU is 8-1 in the confines of Getterman this season. As a whole, Big 12 teams are 109-13 (89 %) at home in 2010.
REAL REPKA REEMERGES
Courtney Repka had her best collegiate game on March 31, allowing just three hits and striking out a season-high 11 batters in a 166 pitch effort against No. 18 Texas A&M. The freshman previously had just three games of five-pus strikeouts this season.
CANION, WELDON DONE FOR SEASON
Baylor sophomore pitcher Whitney Canion will miss the rest of the 2010 season due to an increasing stress reaction in her left forearm. Canion, the 2009 Big 12 Freshman and Pitcher of the Year, was 5-3 with a 1.58 ERA and 79 strikeouts in 48.2 innings this season. Junior infielder Meagan Weldon will also miss the rest of the season with an injury after playing in seven games.
WESLEY'S €ˆMIRRORING EACH OTHER
Not only are twin sisters Tiffany and Nicole Wesley identical in physical appearance, but they are mirroring each other on the softball field. The duo rank first and second on the team in batting average and are a combined 29-for-29 in stolen bases. Nicole is second in the Big 12 with a .446 average, while Tiffany (hitting .364) is the team leader with 23 runs.
NIETEN WAS ALL SHE NEEDED
Maybe it was a change in the name, but Courtney Nieten (who was formerly Courtney Oberg until her wedding in December) has busted out and swung a hot bat. She is on a six-game hit streak and is second on the team with 24 RBI. In addition, she is 9-for-12 in RBI opportunities with runners on third and less than two outs, and is also hitting .375 with two outs, proving she can come through in the clutch.
VANNATTA BREAKS €ˆOUT
Jordan Vannatta came into the season with one home run and 13 RBI in her career, as well as a batting average of .179. She has busted out this season, hitting .342 with five homers, seven doubles and 27 RBI. CLOSE LOSSES
Of Baylor's 10 losses so far this season, five of them have come by one run, while two have been in extra innings. In addition, six losses have come to ranked teams.
TWO OUTS? NO €ˆPROBLEM
The Lady Bears have had a knack for scoring with two outs this season. Of the 159 RBI so far, 65 (41 percent) of them have come with two outs.
Tiffany Wesley'S ERRORLESS STREAK REACHES CENTURY
Senior left fielder Tiffany Wesley has gone 102-straight games without making an error (a program record), dating back to her last error on March 30, 2008 at Oklahoma State.
AGAINST RANKED FOES
Baylor is 2-6 against ranked opponents this season.
THIEVES
Baylor has stolen a conference-leading 84 bases this season, and entered the weekend ranked third in the country in total stolen bases as well as third with a 2.80 stolen bases per game average.
DROPPING BOMBS
While it may not be 2007, the power is back in the Baylor lineup. In 2009, the Lady Bears hit 31 home runs in 62 games, however, in 2010 BU has hit 27 home runs through 30 games.
