LAWRENCE, Kan. - For the sixth consecutive season, Baylor's second-ranked women's tennis team can call themselves Big 12 Champions after sweeping Kansas 7-0 on Sunday in Lawrence, Kan., to win the title outright. The win also marked the 42nd consecutive Big 12 regular season win and 52nd consecutive victory over Big 12 opponents including postseason play.
"Kansas really came at us hard today," head coach Joey Scrivano said. "I felt like they gave us all we could handle, especially at certain positions. Their team is going to be dangerous in the Big 12 tournament if they play the way they did today.
Baylor (24-2, 11-0 Big 12) won its 18th consecutive match on the season, and completed its third straight undefeated Big 12 regular season with the win over the Jayhawks (9-14, 1-10 Big 12). With the win, Baylor earned the No. 1 seed for the Big 12 Tournament.
"Anytime you are in position to clinch a championship, it is an added plus," Scrivano said. "I like the way our team handled it. They didn't panic, they just came out and executed well. I am really proud of them."
The Lady Bears started out a near-perfect day with spectacular play on the doubles courts, led by their No. 1 duo of Lenka Broosova and Csilla Borsanyi. The 10th-ranked duo disposed of KU's Ekaterina Morozova and Erin Wilbert by a score of 8-1.
On Courts No. 2 and 3, the Baylor pairs followed suit. Nina Secerbegovic and Jelena Stanivuk continued their hot streak, winning their 13th consecutive match 8-4, while Taylor Ormond and Carla Lindlar won their fourth consecutive match 8-5.
In singles, the Lady Bears won in straight sets on five of the six courts, leaving no doubt about their sixth consecutive Big 12 title. Karolina Filipiak and 99th-ranked Csilla Borsanyi each only dropped two games on their way to wins. Filipiak took down Victoria Khanevskaya 6-1, 6-1, while Borsanyi beat Kunigunda Dorn 6-2, 6-0.
Secerbegovic, ranked 18th, added a 6-3, 6-0 win over Sara Lazarevic on Court No. 2, and the fifth-ranked Broosova beat Ekaterina Morozova at No. 1 singles 6-4, 6-2. In her first singles action in 10 days, Stanivuk didn't miss a beat on her way to victory over Erin Wilbert 6-3, 6-3.
Junior Taylor Ormond rebounded from her first loss in four matches yesterday to grind through a three-set win over Maria Martinez. Ormond dropped the first set 6-4, but got a late break to win the second set 7-5 before winning the super tiebreaker 10-5.
Baylor's next match will be in the quarterfinal round of the Big 12 Women's Tennis Championship in Austin, Texas. With the No. 1 seed, Baylor earns a first-round bye and will take on the winner of the No. 8 seed vs. No. 9 seed on Friday morning at 9 a.m. The tournament's first round begins on Thursday, April 29. The Lady Bears enter the conference tournament as the top seed for the sixth season in a row, along with being the four-time defending champions.
