WACO, Texas - Baylor's No. 1-ranked women's tennis team hosts fifth-ranked Northwestern in a showdown of two teams that have spent time as the top-ranked squad in the nation. The match, played at the Baylor Tennis Center, is set for Friday, April 9 at 5 p.m.
Riding a 10-match winning streak, the Lady Bears enter the match fresh off a 6-1 win over sixth-ranked Notre Dame in the middle of a stretch with 10 of 12 matches at home. Baylor enters the match with four ranked singles players, including three that have won at least seven singles matches in a row.
Sixth-ranked Lenka Broosova has dropped just three sets in her seven-match win streak, which features five top 50 wins, including three in a row over top-30 players. Against Notre Dame, the senior put together an all-around spectacular match to beat 18th-ranked Kristy Frilling 6-1, 6-1.
Sophomore Nina Secerbegovic, ranked 16th in the nation, has been Baylor's most dominant singles player, holding a perfect 18-0 dual-match singles record, including six consecutive wins over ranked opponents. During the 18-match win streak, Secerbegovic has lost just three sets and has trailed by a set only twice.
Also in the singles rankings for the Bears are Taylor Ormond and Csilla Borsanyi. Ormond, ranked 59th, has won eight matches in a row and five consecutive over ranked opponents. The junior has lost just three sets during the streak. Ormond began the dual-match season outside of the top 125 ranked by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association. Borsanyi, ranked as high as 53rd this season, sits at No. 97. The senior has won her last two matches after a stretch where she dropped three of four.
In doubles, the Lady Bears are led by the 12th-ranked duo of Broosova and Borsanyi, who have compiled a 14-4 record on the season. As of late, the combination of Sececerbegovic and Jelena Stanivuk has been the most effective, winning each of their last six matches.
On the season the Lady Bears (16-2) have compiled a 14-2 record against ranked opponents, including a 5-1 mark against the nation's top 10. Baylor is 2-0 in its two matches against top-five competition.
No. 5 Northwestern (14-4), who spent a total of three weeks at No. 1, has been in the top two for the majority of the season, but is currently at its lowest rank of 2010. The Wildcats only losses have come at the hands of No. 17 Notre Dame, No. 8 Michigan, No. 1 UNC, and No. 8 Duke. All four teams currently sit among the top 10.
In singles, 13th ranked Maria Mosolova leads the way in the No. 1 position with a 13-5 record, while No. 45 Samantha Murray is the only other ranked singles player. Murray has an 11-6 record at the No. 2 position for the Wildcats.
In doubles, the Wildcats have five sets of ranked pairs among a group of just five players, switching their combinations nearly every match. Lauren Lui and Elena Chernyakova are the highest at No. 18. The combo of Lui and Mosolova is 23rd, while Lui and Murray are 70th. Brittany Wowchuk and Chernyakova are ranked 54th, while Wowchuk and Mosolova are ranked 69th.
