A seven-run comeback by Baylor (27-24) in game two nearly gave the Lady Bears a sweep, however they fell 9-7 after picking up a 6-0 win in game one against Houston (29-23-1) Saturday night at Getterman Stadium.
Game One
Courtney Repka and Alicia Vasquez combined for a two-hit shutout of the Cougars in game one, as BU won 6-0.
Megan Turk with 2-for-3 with three RBI, while Courtney Nieten smashed a two-run home run, her seventh of the season, to pace the Baylor offense.
Baylor took a 1-0 lead in the first, as Nieten walked with the bases loaded for an RBI. With no outs, and the bags still full of Lady Bears, BU could not scratch across another run, keeping it 1-0.
Jordan Vannatta led off the third inning with a single and Nieten took the first pitch over the left field wall for a two-run bomb. With the bases again loaded, Turk ripped a two-RBI single that scored KJ Freeland and Kathy Shelton to make it 5-0.
Turk tacked on the final run with her third RBI, on a single to left that scored Shelton.
Repka and Vasquez combined to retire 11-straight Houston batters before a single with one out in the seventh, but Vasquez got the final two outs to preserve the shutout.
Game Two
The Lady Bears mounted a seven-run rally in the final two innings, but it was not enough to overcome the nine-run deficit, as BU fell 9-7 in game two.
Kayce Walker led the way, going 4-for-4 with two RBI, tying her career high in hits.
The Cougars scored five runs in the third inning, capped off by a two-run home run from Jennifer Klinkert, take the early advantage.
A two-run double in the fifth from Reina Gaber gave Houston a 7-0 lead, and another double from Gaber in the sixth gave the Cougars the 9-0 lead after six innings.
Needing a pair of runs to keep the game alive, Baylor came through with four in the bottom of the inning. With one out and the bases loaded, Kelsi Kettler drew a walk to bring in the first run of the game. Turk then hit into a fielder's choice, but a bobble by the catcher on the throw home allowed a pair of runs to score to cut the lead to six. Sydney Wilson followed with an RBI-single, but Turk got caught in a rundown between third and home for the second out. With the bases again loaded, Jordan Vannatta struck out swinging to end the inning.
Repka (19-18) reentered the game and got Houston to go down in order, keeping the Lady Bears in the game.
Three-straight singles from Nieten, Bree Hanafin and Shelton got the rally going again, loading the bases with no outs. With one out, Turk hit into a fielder's choice, scoring one run. Wilson walked to load the bases again, and Walker delivered a two-RBI single to left center to cut the deficit to just two. Nicole Wesley came up and hit a chopper that nearly got over the pitcher's head, but a nice play from reliever, Bailey Watts ended the rally and the game for Baylor.
The Lady Bears will be the eight seed at the Big 12 Tournament and begin opening round play against No. 9 Iowa State on Friday, May 14 at 5:00 p.m. at ASA Hall of Fame Stadium in Oklahoma City, Okla.
