TEMPE, Ariz. - Baylor (3-1-0) suffered its first defeat of the season after falling 3-1 to Arizona State (2-0) on Sunday afternoon at Sun Devil Soccer Stadium. The Sun Devils scored two goals in the first 14 minutes, as all four goals scored on the day came in the opening half.
"We made some mental errors in the first half which you can't do at this level," head coach Marci Jobson said. "We needed this game for our improvement and this team will be ready to move forward and improve on our weaknesses."
Arizona State struck first in the 11th minute, as Kristen Volpe took a cross from Sierra Cook and headed it into the goal for her second of the season and a 1-0 lead.
The Sun Devils doubled their lead just three minutes later when Jasmine Roth headed in a corner from Jill Shoquist.
Baylor fought back and cut the deficit in half in the 20th minute with a Staz Salinas header off a corner kick from Hannah Dismuke that marked her first goal of the season.
ASU took back the two-goal lead in the 32nd minute, as Volpe assisted Cook for a 3-1 lead.
Down 3-1 at the break, the Bears managed just one shot in the second half and were outshot 16-7 for the game.
BU goalie Courtney Seelhorst kept the game the Bears in the game with a season-high six saves on the afternoon.
Baylor will be back in action on Friday, Sept. 3 as it hosts UTSA at 7:00 p.m.
