WACO, Texas - Baylor head football coach Art Briles opens his 2010 fall camp with a practice at 2:45 p.m. Friday at the Highers Complex Fields.
Briles and staff welcomed 105 student-athletes who reported to camp Wednesday in preparation for a day of weight lifting on Thursday before the first fall practice.
Following the three-week camp, Baylor opens the 2010 season with a game against Sam Houston State at 6 p.m. on Sept. 4 at Floyd Casey Stadium.
The Bears return 14 starters - seven on offense, five on defense and two on special teams - 47 lettermen and 13 scholarship redshirts from last season.
Baylor welcomes back sophomore quarterback Robert Griffin III. The 2008 Freshman All-American missed the final nine games of the 2009 season with a knee injury, but the Big 12 Conference granted a medical hardship waiver, leaving him with three remaining seasons of eligibility.
The Bears return six players who have earned preseason all-conference honors. Senior punter Derek Epperson is a consensus first-team All-Big 12 selection, in addition to earning preseason All-America honors and being named to the Ray Guy Award watch list.
Junior wide receiver Kendal Wright (Athlon and Blue Ribbon) and senior offensive tackle Danny Watkins (Blue Ribbon) both garnered preseason first-team all-conference honors, with Watkins also named to the Rotary-Lombardi Award watch list.
Senior defensive tackle Phil Taylor has been projected a preseason all-Big 12 second-teamer by Phil Steele, while Griffin and senior linebacker Antonio Johnson were named to Steele's fourth team. Griffin, who has accounted for 34 touchdowns in 15 career games, is also on watch lists for the Manning and O'Brien Awards.
Friday's practice is open to the public. For future practice information, contact the football office at 710-3058.
