WACO, Texas - After opening the season with a 34-3 win over Sam Houston State, Baylor will now welcome the University of Buffalo to Floyd Casey Stadium as the Bears take on the Bulls Saturday at 6:10 p.m. The game will be televised by Fox College Sports.
Here are Art Briles' Sunday thoughts on the Bears' victory over Sam Houston State.
On last night's game...
"(We) saw what we wanted to see as far as effort. I would just say effort and intensity, enthusiasm and those things you have to have. Our guys played extremely hard. We might not have been as clean as we liked to be in some areas, but we played hard and we won. That is the main thing. There are some things we can correct and get better at, which we will do. The good thing is we got a win to work on those things with."
On the offense not clicking...
"You have to be careful not to be a perfectionist, but we certainly feel like we can play a whole lot better and we will play a whole lot better. We had opportunities and we took advantage of some and some we didn't. They (Sam Houston State) kind of came in with an all or nothing attitude. I will be surprised if we see that philosophy much more this season."
On the crowd...
"It is amazing, honestly. The March of the Bears was very inspirational and then to see the stadium full. I mean to me it looked full. It is a deal where we feel the need to produce and perform. It is gratifying to know that there are a lot of people wanting us to do well."
On the team's fast start...
"The players had a lot of energy and I think that is why we came out hot and we did start hot on both sides of the ball. I think we lost a little bit of our intensity as the game progressed and as we missed some opportunities offensively , the defense continued to play well. I think from that standpoint we started pressing a little bit, but I do like the way we started with the exception of the opening drive."
On why the intensity was lost...
"I don't know that is what we will have to see. I don't think we certainly kept the intensity level we would like to keep. Now we did miss a couple good opportunities there in the third quarter to add another score or to, but that is just about execution. That to me is not as much about behavior or lack of intensity. That is just about execution."
On the play of the offensive line...
"We had two sacks. I think they did well. I think they played hard. Of course, there were some missed assignments due to the fact of some of the looks they were getting, but if you play hard and hustle a lot of that makes up for it. They kept some plays alive by their hustle."
On the play of the defensive line...
"I thought they were really good. They really played fast the whole night and really pushed up field all night. We didn't get as many sacks as we would have liked, but we created some bad throws and things from the quarterback just by pressuring him."
On the running game...
"What we didn't do a good job of last night was making positive yards on first down and once we saw the way they were playing us we knew it was going to be that situation, because it was hit or miss on first down if you are trying to throw the ball. If you are not you are looking at second and 10, third and long. Actually our third down percentage was not very good, five of 14, but we had a lot of third and longs. That was dictated by the chances that we took on earlier downs."
On the play of the cornerbacks...
"I was really pleased with them. I thought they were very active. I thought they were active in both the passing game and forcing the run a little bit. We knew going in we had four or five guys back there that we really have a lot of confidence in. That is one of the deepest areas of our football team right now is the cornerback position."
On the play of the linebackers...
"Those guys have to physical. They have to be fast and they have got to be fearless and they did those things last night. They moved around. They flew around. They got to the ball. They helped clean up a lot of tackles and initiated a few. They really did a good job. They were cut loose by the way our D-line played up front. I thought those guys up front really occupied some people, pressed the line of scrimmages and created a lot of plays for other folks."
