COLLEGE STATION, Texas - Baylor's cross country teams hit the road for the first time in 2010 for the Texas A&M Invitational on Friday at the Penberthy Intramural on the campus of Texas A&M University in College Station, Texas. The women's 5,000-meter race is set to start at 6:20 p.m., while the men will compete in an 8,000-meter race at 7:35 p.m.
The meet will feature 15 schools in the collegiate competition, as well as more than 50 high schools and over 1,600 runners. The meet has a heavy dose of ranked NCAA South Central Region members. Baylor is ranked No. 4 in the women's regional rankings, and will compete against No. 1 SMU, No. 2 Rice, No. 4 SMU, No. 6 Texas A&M and No. 8 TAMU-Corpus Christi. On the men's side, the No. 7 Bears will take on No. 2 Texas, No. 3 Texas A&M and No. 15 TAMU-CC.
Both the BU men's and women's teams enter the week fresh off team titles at the Bear Twilight Invitational in Waco, Texas. On the women's side, Cate Westenhover took the individual victory to lead a group of five BU runners in the top 10. The Lady Bears finished with just 22 points, 21 ahead of second-place TCU.
Westenhover was the only runner on the women's side to crack the 14-minute barrier over the 4,000-meter course, finishing in a time of 13:59.7. BU's Leigh Ann Ganzar and Kristen Hanselka finished second and fourth, respectively, while Katie Shaw and Samantha Patty were eighth and ninth.
For the men, the senior duo of Robbie Knorr and Jeff Sadler finished second and third, while newcomer Brad Miles was seventh, Brandon Reed was ninth and Brandon White was 10th to complete the Baylor top-five in the top 10 overall.
Baylor was scheduled to compete in the Texas A&M Invitational in 2009, but the meet was cancelled due to inclement weather.
