IRVING, Texas -
The Baylor softball team was picked to finish sixth in a pre-season vote conducted by league coaches, the Big 12 Conference office announced Tuesday. The Lady Bears were picked to finish sixth in 2009 and ended up in third place, advancing to the NCAA Super Regionals.
Oklahoma (79 points) received seven of 10 first-place votes for the second straight season. Missouri (71) had two tallies while Texas received one vote. The Longhorns (69) ranked third in the preseason poll, as Texas A&M (54) edged out Oklahoma State (50) for fourth place. Texas Tech (33) and Nebraska (26) finished in seventh and eighth, respectively, while Iowa State (15) and Kansas (13) rounded out this year's preseason poll.
Baylor, which opens practice on Saturday, Jan. 22, returns 12 letterwinners and seven starters off of last season's squad, including 2009 Big 12 Pitcher and Freshman of the Year, Whitney Canion, who will return after a medical redshirt. The Lady Bears will begin the 2011 season at home for the Getterman Classic on Feb. 11-13. To purchase season tickets for Baylor's 2011 home schedule, call 245-710-1000.
