Baylor (3-0) took home its fourth consecutive Willis Invitational title with a pair of victories on Saturday at the Willis Family Equestrian Center. The Bears earned a 11-4 win over Miami (Ohio) and a 10-6 victory over Fresno State en route to the first-place finish.
"We like keeping this trophy here at home," head coach Ellen White said. "We had both disciplines really step up at different times this weekend and show our depth."
The Bears began competition against Miami (Ohio) with a 4-0 sweep in fences. Ashley McGehee earned MVP honors with an 82, while Lisa Goldman (80), Sue Carol Thompson (79) and Colby Russey (74) each earned points for BU.
Baylor picked up a 3-1 win in flat, giving it the 7-1 lead overall. Taylor Brown earned MVP honors with an 85, as Tara Funk (80) and Kim Woodsum (70) picked up the rest of the points.
The western side earned a 4-3 overall win beginning with a 2-1 win in reining. Ellis Powell earned the MVP nod with a 74 and Amber Mooney scored a 73.5 to round out the scoring.
Baylor wrapped up round two with a 2-2 tie in horsemanship with Meghan Murphy scoring a 77 for MVP honors, while the pair of points went to Chelsea Retmier (76.5) and Ashley Garza (74.5).
Needing a win over Fresno State to capture the title, it was the western squad that led the way with a 6-2 victory. Horsemanship led off with a 3-1 win, as Bryn Lindley earned a 76, followed by Murphy's 76.5 and Parris Rice's 75.5.
Reining added another 3-1 win for the four point advantage. Amber Mooney scored a discipline high mark of 77 for MVP, while Barbara Aitken's 76.5 and Olivia Rogers' 71.5 added to the lead.
The Bears earned a 4-4 tie in hunter seat, taking a 3-1 win in flat that was led by Goldman's 79. Funk (75) and Brown (73) rounded out the scoring.
Goldman's 80 was the lone score for BU in fences, but the victory had already been wrapped up for Baylor.
The Bears will next be in action on Friday, Oct. 14 at Kansas State.
