FORT WORTH, Texas- Senior Diana Nakic fought through a tough singles match, and combined with sophomore Jordaan Sanford in doubles, to advance to the semifinals in both at the ITA Texas Regional on Sunday in Fort Worth, Texas.
"The pair did a great job in doubles, Tech always competes hard and gives us a tough match," head coach Joey Scrivano said. "Diana played really well at the beginning of the match, but her opponent really came alive and played well. I'm proud of the way she kept fighting and beat an opponent that got really hot."
Nakic, seeded fourth in the singles field, took the first set 6-2 over TCU's Simona Parajova, but fell 6-4 in the second set. With Parajova finding her stroke, Nakic dug deep to pull out the 6-3 win in the third set and advance to one of the final four spots. The winner of both singles and doubles earns a berth into the ITA National Collegiate Indoor Championships in early November.
In doubles, Nakic joined with Sanford, who was battling an illness that would later cause her to retire from her quarterfinal singles match. The pair, however, took down a solid Texas Tech team of Nikki Sanders and Caroline Starck 8-4.
Sanford entered the singles quarterfinal taking on Texas' second-seeded Aeriel Ellis, but couldn't make it past the first game, receiving a 1-0, ret., loss due to the illness.
The pair will be back on the court in the doubles semifinal at 10 a.m., while Nakic will then play in the singles semifinal at 12:30 p.m. in the ITA Texas Regional, hosted at TCU.
