PACIFIC PALISADES, Calif.- Senior Sona Novakova started her season off with a win over the second-ranked player in the country, as Baylor had three players in action on Thursday at the ITA/Riviera All-American Championship in Pacific Palisades, Calif.
Novakova, ranked 13th in the nation, defeated the highest-ranked player of her career in No. 3 Kristy Frilling of Notre Dame. Novakova fell in the first set 4-6, but came back to win the next two 7-5, 6-4, to advance to the Round of 16 in the main draw.
In main draw doubles play, Novakova teamed with Nina Secerbegovic to take on the 11th-ranked Stanford combo of Mallory Burdette and Nicole Gibbs. The 10th-ranked Baylor duo fell 9-7 in a tight match.
In other main draw singles action, 28th-ranked Diana Nakic's winning run came to an end in the first round with a lost to 16th-ranked Danielle Lao of USC. Nakic, who had won three consecutive matches in qualifying to reach the main draw, fell in straight sets, 2-6, 0-6. Senior Nina Secerbegovic, ranked 23rd, fell in straights in her first match of the season against No. 2 Allie Will of Florida, 3-6, 3-6.
On Friday, Novakova will continue play in the Round of 16 of the main draw, taking on Alabama's 27th-ranked Mary Anne Macfarlane, while Nakic and Secerbegovic will enter consolation play. Nakic will face Virginia's 36th-ranked Emily Fraser and Secerbegovic will take on Florida's 26th-ranked Joanna Mather.
