Baylor Head Coach Art Briles
Opening statement...
"You know the thing about this game, like I was telling the players, is the first few games we wanted to win. We felt like it would be great if we won, everybody might smile a little bit. But this game tonight, we had to win. And that's a tough tough situation for your football team to be in, for your coaching staff and for your university. And to be able to do that and come out with a victory says a lot about the football team and the direction they're going and who they have playing the game. So I'm extremely proud of our guys for playing in a real tough situation with some bad things happening early and never losing faith. And that's hard to do."
On the offense helping the defense, and vice versa...
"That's how you win. That, without a doubt,is what you've got to do to win. You have to lean on each other and you've got to feed off of each other. And I €ˆthought our defense had a bunch of three-and-outs. I haven't looked at the book but I think they're probably three or four throughout the game, which is huge. And we turned it over a couple of times early when they had the wind at their back. They come away with seven points at the end of the first quarter and we're thinking, `You get the wind at your back, you better score.' And the defense did a great job early in the game, allowed us to get a little momentum and take a good lead into halftime. But we certainly thought we should have had 35 or 27."
On playing with the wind...
"It's bad. I'd almost rather have rain that wind, quite honestly, because you can deal with rain. Wind's a tough thing to deal with when you're trying to throw the football, and especially on the kicking game. It's both sides, what your preference is from an offensive schematic standpoint."
On the running game this game...
"Well it's good, the thing that really gives us a great opportunity when people play us like this is that we have a multi-dimentional quarterback. We all know what Robert (Griffin III) can do throwing the football, but we also all know what he can do running the football. So we have another threat back there that can really stretch the defense and open up holes for the running backs and allow him to make some runs. So that's the part that gives us an opportunity to be successful depending on how people play us. A lot of those things that might be eight runs in a row, but six of those might be run-pass calls, it depends on what the defense is giving us. So it's his opportunity to run it or throw it."
Baylor Quarterback Robert Griffin III
On running the ball...
"They came out and their main goal was to come out and not let us get the big play. A lot of times I ended up running, but you know me, I'm going to be protective of the ball. But if we weren't able to run the ball tonight we wouldn't have won the game. Terrance Ganaway was a big part of that."
On the win...
"I had fun today. The thing is when you're winning you're having fun. I saw a lot of smiles on the sidelines. I don't mind running, I don't mind putting my body on the line in the Big 12 competition because it's whatever we need to win."
Baylor Defensive End Tevin Elliott
On his fumble recovery...
"I haven't run like that since high school as a little receiver. That was a good, long run. It was real fun, but I couldn't have made the play if it wasn't for Gary Mason, Jr. He made them fumble and I picked up the ball and I knew I had to get to the end zone."
On getting better every week...
"Every week, we go out every day and try to do the best we can do to get the quarterback."
Baylor Running Back Terrance Ganaway
On the running game...
"I did feel really good about the game tonight. I couldn't even eat, couldn't even sleep last night. I was really excited about this. After last week we knew we had to bounce back. We knew we needed this win and we went out there and got it."
On the last two touchdowns...
"They're just as big any touchdowns. The small plays are the ones that make a difference. I'm just doing what I do. God has given me the ability to play football, I just try to play to full every play."
Iowa State Head Coach Paul Rhoads
On Baylor's speed...
"They're a very fast team. They're a very good football team. There's a reason that young man (Robert Griffin III) is a Heisman Trophy frontrunner. There's a reason they're 4-1 and a top 25 football team. They've got great skill and they play very good football."
On the tempo of the game...
"I €ˆwouldn't say it's as much of them wearing us out as us wearing ourselves out. You can't go three-and-out as many times as we did offensively in the first half and help your defensive football team. When you're playing a fast tempo offense like that, you've got to get your defense on the sideline and give them a little break. And our offensive football team did not do that."
On the kicking game...
"I €ˆdon't believe there are any issues with our punting game. We missed two extra points at the Division I €ˆlevel. I'd just leave it at that."
On the status of running back Shontrelle Johnson...
"Shontrelle's still got some issues lingering with his neck. [He's] still undergoing further tests. We're waiting on those results."
On preparing for the upcoming game against Missouri...
"This will be a very pivotal week for our football team. I €ˆthink I've got a football team with young men of great character and great integrity. This is one of those games and weeks that tests that. We've got two back-to-back losses after a fast start. We're playing another team that's lost a couple football games. We've got to go to their stadium to play. This will be a fun week to be a coach and get a chance to teach and guide these young men and prepare them for a game on Saturday."
