FORT WALTON BEACH, Fla. - Baylor junior quarterback Robert Griffin III has been picked as one of 13 finalists for the 2011 Danny Wuerffel Trophy, the All Sports Association of Fort Walton Beach, Fla. announced Monday.
Sometimes referred to as the "Humanitarian Heisman," the Wuerffel Trophy is awarded based on academic and athletic performance and community service.
RG3 is one of two representatives from the Big 12 Conference among the finalists, joining Emmanuel Acho of Texas, whose brother Sam Acho won the 2010 Wuerffel Trophy.
Griffin III has also been named one of five finalists for the Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award and one of 16 semifinalists for the Maxwell and Davey O'Brien Awards. He's been named to the Allstate AFCA Good Works Team, is on watch lists for the Walter Camp Award and the Manning Award and was named first-team academic all-district.
On the field, RG3 holds or is tied for 46 school records, including season and career consecutive games with a touchdown pass, which he tied during Baylor's 21-point fourth-quarter comeback at Kansas on Saturday.
Through nine games this season, RG3 ranks second nationally in completion percentage (74.17), total offense (396.78) and points responsibility (22.89). He's third nationally in pass efficiency (188.58) and yards per attempt (10.24).
RG3 is one of four players in FBS history with more than 9,000 career passing yards and more than 2,000 career rushing yards, joining Dan LeFevour (Central Michigan), Colin Kaepernick (Nevada) and Tim Tebow (Florida).
The former All-American track hurdler received his undergraduate degree in political science in December and is currently enrolled in graduate school.
A committee that includes the Wuerffel Trophy national directors, selection committee members and past winners, will vote on the finalists later this month, and the winner will be formally announced Dec. 6. The award will be presented at the All Sports Association's 43rd Annual Awards Banquet on Feb. 17.
