IRVING, Texas - Baylor quarterback Robert Griffin III has been named Big 12 Offensive Player of the Week, as selected by a panel of media Monday. It's the second time this season and the fourth time in his career RG3 has earned the award.
Griffin III was named National Player of the Week by Yahoo!/Rivals and Walter Camp National Offensive Player of the Week on Sunday.
RG3 threw for 479 yards and tallied 551 yards of total offense, breaking his own school records in both categories in Baylor's 45-38 win over then-No. 5 Oklahoma. His 34-yard touchdown pass to Terrance Williams with eight seconds remaining gave Baylor its first win over a top-5 opponent since 1985.
After the win, Baylor moved up from No. 22 to No. 18 in the BCS Standings - the best BCS standing in program history. The Bears also jumped to No. 21 in the AP Top 25 and No. 20 in the USA TODAY Coaches Poll.
The award marks the first time Baylor has ever had two Big 12 Offensive Player of the Week awards in the same season. RG3 was honored earlier this season after leading the Bears to a season-opening win over then-No. 14 TCU. Prior to the 2011 season, he earned Big 12 Offensive Player of the Week on Sept. 15, 2008 and Oct. 24, 2010. Only Joe Pawelek (twice), Willie Andrews (twice), Byron Landor (twice) and Daniel Sepulveda (twice) had ever earned multiple Big 12 weekly honors for Baylor.
RG3 completed 21 of 34 passes and threw four touchdowns without an interception. He also rushed 18 times for a team-high 72 yards. His 551 yards of total offense were 92 more than the previous school record, which he set in a win over Missouri on Nov. 5.
With the game tied 38-38, Griffin III completed both pass attempts for 46 yards and rushed twice for 30 yards on the Bears' game-winning drive. He was 5-of-7 for 107 passing yards and a touchdown in the fourth quarter, and he added 50 rushing yards in the final period.
Baylor returns to action in the Texas Farm Bureau Insurance Shootout against Texas Tech at 6 p.m. CST Saturday at Cowboys Stadium in Arlington. The game will be televised live nationally on FSN, as Baylor looks for its fifth Big 12 win for the first time and its first win over Texas Tech since 1995. Tickets can be purchased online at www.mygreenandgold.com/football/, by calling 254-710-1000 or at the Baylor Athletic Ticket Office at the Ferrell Center.
