STORY LINES • Baylor looks to become bowl-eligible in consecutive seasons when it plays at Kansas (2-7, 0-6) at 1 p.m. Saturday. With a bowl bid this season, the Bears would play in bowls in consecutive years for the first time since 1991-92.
• Baylor leads the nation in passing efficiency (189.57), ranks second in total offense (577.13) and first downs (29.00), fifth in passing offense (362.50), ninth in scoring offense (41.50), 20th in rushing offense (214.63) and 34th in punt returns (10.45).
• Baylor's 12 wins over the last two seasons are its most over a two-year span since winning 14 games in 1994 (7) and 1995 (7).
• Baylor is one of two FBS schools averaging 300+ yards passing and 200+ yards rushing (Texas A&M). The same teams are the only two to rank in the top 20 in both rushing offense and passing offense. The Bears rank fifth nationally in passing (362.50) and 20th in rushing (214.63).
• Half of Baylor's scoring drives (24 of 48) have taken less than two minutes, including 12 scoring drives of less than 60 seconds.
• Heisman Trophy candidate QB
Robert Griffin III has completed 73.99 percent of his passes (202-of-273), which ranks third nationally. He has thrown only four interceptions in his last 334 pass attempts. RG3 ranks second nationally in total offense (395.88) and third yards per attempt (10.19).
• RG3 ranks second nationally in points responsibility (22.75). He's also third nationally in pass efficiency (188.06) and is on pace to break the NCAA single-season record (186.0 by Hawai`i QB Colt Brennan in 2006).
• RG3 has thrown for 400-plus yards in three straight games, giving him four of the eight 400-yard passing games in program history. In three road games this season, he's thrown for 1,201 yards and nine touchdowns while completing 69.4 percent of his passes.
• IR
Kendall Wright ranks fifth nationally in both receptions (9.13) and receiving yards per game (121.38).
• IR Tevin Reese needs 19 yards to become the 4th current Bear and 23rd in program history with 1,000 career receiving yards. Wright,
Lanear Sampson and
Terrance Williams all have more than 1,000 career receiving yards.
SERIES HISTORY
Baylor and Kansas will meet for just the 11th time on the gridiron Saturday. Baylor leads the brief series 6-4, but the Bears have only won once in five trips to Lawrence. Saturday will mark Art Briles' second game against Kansas as Baylor head coach, but his third overall. He led the Bears to a 55-7 win over the Jayhawks last season in Waco, and in his only other meeting as Houston head coach, Briles' Cougars lost to the Jayhawks in the 2005 Fort Worth Bowl.
Baylor's last win in Lawrence was a 27-14 win in 1988. The home team has won all seven meetings between Baylor and Kansas in Big 12 Conference history.
Baylor's 55-7 win over Kansas last season was its most lopsided conference victory ever. The Bears had never won a Big 12 game by more than 28 points and their largest conference victory was a 47-point Southwest Conference win over Arkansas in 1922.
This year's game will be the latest in the season the two teams have ever met. The only other November game between Baylor and Kansas came when KU won 45-10 in Lawrence on Nov. 6, 1999.
NATION'S 2ND-MOST POWERFUL OFFENSE
Baylor's offense is one of two to rank in the top 20 nationally in rushing and passing offense (Texas A&M). The same teams are the only two to average at least 200 yards rushing and 300 yards passing per game.
Baylor leads the nation in passing efficiency (189.57), ranks second in total offense (577.13) and first downs (29.0), fifth in passing offense (362.5), ninth in scoring offense (41.5), 20th in rushing offense (214.63) and 34th in punt returns (10.45).
Baylor's offense is averaging 41.5 points, 577.13 yards of total offense, 362.5 passing yards and 7.43 yards per play, while completing 74.0 percent of its passes; all five currently would stand as Baylor single-season records. Baylor has already broken the single-season school record for passing touchdowns (27).
Baylor has four games of 600+ yards total offense this season. The Bears had only seven such games in their previous 109 seasons, with two of those coming last year. Six of the 11 600-yard games in program history have been in the Art Briles era.
Baylor's offensive success can be attributed to its play-caller, co-offensive coordinator Philip Montgomery. Montgomery and head coach Art Briles are the architects of Baylor's potent offense.
RG3's SUCCESS AGAINST STATE OF KANSAS
RG3 has put up impressive passing numbers in three career games against schools from the state of Kansas, all in 2010 and 2011.
Griffin III has combined to throw for 1,130 yards and 12 touchdowns with only two interceptions in three career games against Kansas and Kansas State. He's completed 71.4 percent (75-of-105) of his passes in those games.
In 2010, RG3 completed 26-of-38 passes for 404 yards and 4 TDs with 1 INT in a 47-42 win over Kansas State as the Bears clinched bowl eligibility. He also went 26-of-36 for 380 yards and 3 TDs in a 55-7 win over Kansas.
Earlier this season, RG3 went 23-of-31 for 346 yards, 5 TDs and 1 INT in a 36-35 loss at Kansas State.
GANAWAY ON TRACK TO BECOME 8th 1,000-Yard rusher
Senior RB Terrance Ganaway, who ranks 24th in Baylor history with 1,339 career rushing yards, has 844 rushing yards on 139 carries through eight games. His 844 rushing yards currently rank as the 15th-best single-season total in program history. Ganaway needs 156 yards to post the eighth 1,000-yard rushing season in program history.
If Ganaway reaches the millennium mark, Baylor will have 1,000-yard rushers in back-to-back seasons for only the second time in program history. Steve Beaird (1,104) and Cleveland Franklin (1,112) rushed for 1,000 yards in 1974 and 1975, respectively. Last season, Jay Finley rushed for a school-record 1,218 yards.
THE WRIGHT NCAA STUFF
RG3 is not the only Baylor player currently ranked among the active FBS career leaders. His favorite target, senior IR Kendall Wright, ranks in the top 20 of five career categories -- 267 receptions (3rd), 3,312 receiving yards (5th), 25 receiving TDs (t8th), 5.9 receptions per game (10th) and 73.6 receiving yards per game (14th).
