The Baylor softball team (2-0) used outstanding performances from Whitney Canion and Dani Leal to sweep day one of the 10th annual Getterman Classic on Friday at Getterman Stadium. Canion threw a complete game to go with 14 strikeouts to knock off No. 24 Illinois (0-2) in game one, while Dani Leal blasted a pair of home runs to guide BU to a 7-2 win over McNeese State (0-2) in game two.
GAME ONE
Baylor 4, No. 24 Illinois 1
Whitney Canion's (1-0) return was a grand one, as the redshirt sophomore struck out 14 batters, allowing four hits, one run and one walk in a complete-game win over No. 24 Illinois. The 14 strikeouts marked the 17th time Canion has had a 10-plus strikeout game in her career and the most since fanning 16 against Nebraska on April 18, 2009 in a 10-inning game. It marked the most strikeouts for her in a seven-inning game in her career.
Baylor totaled just three hits in the game, but took advantage of its opportunities, scoring a pair of unearned runs and one RBI on a walk in the second to take a 3-0 lead. Clare Hosack walked with the bases loaded for her first career RBI, and later in the inning, Kayce Walker reached safely on an error by the first baseman, allowing Hosack and Jordan Vannatta to score.
After giving up two hits in the first inning, Canion shut down the Illini bats and didn't allow another hit until a solo home run by Hollie Pinchback in the top of the sixth.
The Lady Bears padded their lead in the bottom of the sixth, as Sydney Wilson came on to pinch hit for an RBI-single through the left side that scored Vannatta from third to give Baylor the 4-1 lead it wouldn't relinquish.
GAME TWO
Baylor 7, McNeese State 2
Dani Leal blasted a pair of home runs for the second time in her career, while Shelbi Redfearn smacked her first career home run, as Baylor defeated McNeese State, 7-2.
Kayce Walker and Kathy Shelton combined to go 8-for-8 as the Lady Bears recorded 14 hits in the game.
Courtney Repka (1-0) allowed just three hits to go with two earned runs, four walks and five strikeouts for the win.
Redfearn doubled to lead off the second and came around to score on a double from Walker for a 1-0 lead. Shelton then added an RBI on a single that scored Walker to double the lead, 2-0.
Leal crushed her first home run to center field, off the video board, for a solo shot in the third to make it 3-0.
McNeese cut the Lady Bears' lead to one in the bottom of the third, as a two-out single from Molly Guidry brought in a pair of runs.
Leal struck again in the fifth, with a lined shot over the left field wall, making it 4-2 BU. Megan Turk added a two-RBI single, scoring Walker and Shelton in the sixth, making the score 6-2.
Redfearn provided the final blow in the seventh, when her home run landed in the parking lot over left field, making it 7-2.
Baylor takes on UTSA (2-0) on Saturday at 12:30 p.m. at Getterman Stadium. The winner of that game will play in the 3:00 p.m. semifinal, while the loser will play in the 5:30 p.m. game.
