WACO, Texas - The Getterman Classic title returned to its Baylor home as the Lady Bears (5-0) captured the championship with a 3-1 win over No. 24 Illinois (2-3) on Sunday afternoon. The Getterman crown was the sixth for BU in the tournament's 10-year history and first since 2009. The 5-0 start marks the best start to a season since beginning 9-0 in 2007.

Dani Leal broke the tournament record by blasting four home runs during the five-game span, adding the fourth with a solo shot on Sunday. Whitney Canion (2-0) allowed just two hits, one unearned run, three walks and eight strikeouts in a complete-game effort.

"This is a great start to our season," head coach Glenn Moore said. "It is just the first in many steps for this team, but I am very happy with our play overall this weekend."

Baylor jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first inning, as Megan Turk stole second and the ball got away from the shortstop, allowing Kayce Walker to score from third.

In the second, with two outs and the bases loaded, Kathy Shelton singled through the left side, scoring Sydney Wilson for a 2-0 lead.

Leal belted her fourth homer of the weekend to lead off the third, putting the ball over the left field wall for a 3-0 advantage.

Canion, who worked her way out of jams throughout the afternoon, allowed the only Illinois run in the fifth. After a pair of singles and a throwing error on the lefty, a hit by pitch with one out brought in the unearned run, cutting the BU lead to two.

But Canion would shut the door the rest of the way, allowing just one of the final nine batters she faced to reach base.

Baylor will remain home for a three-game series against New Mexico (3-0) beginning with a doubleheader on Friday, Feb. 19 at 4:00 p.m.
