The Baylor softball team will continue its eight-game homestand, hosting New Mexico (3-0) for a three-game series beginning with a doubleheader at 4:00 p.m. on Friday and wrapping up with an 11:30 a.m. game on Saturday.
Scouting The Lobos
UNM is coming off a three-game sweep of Utah Valley State to open the season. It marked the first time the Lobos have swept a three-game series since beating Oklahoma State at home in 2008. New Mexico hit .418 as a team, including 12 doubles and five triples during the opening series. In the circle, sophomore Kari Gutierrez leads the staff with a 2-0 record and a 1.56 ERA.
Last Year Against The Lobos
Baylor traveled to Albuquerque last season for a four-game series, sweeping the Lobos in a pair of doubleheaders. The Lady Bears outscored New Mexico 45-12 over the series, totaling 43 hits and smashing seven home runs.
Let's Get It Started... At Home
The Lady Bears will play 12 of its first 15 games, including its first eight, at the friendly confines of Getterman Stadium. The Lady Bears took home the Getterman Classic crown for the sixth time in the tournament's 10-year history and first since 2009.
BU is already off to a 5-0 start at home after winning just 14 games at home all of 2010.
Early 2007 Comparison
The Lady Bears are off to a 5-0 start, marking the best start to a season since beginning 9-0 in 2007.
Look Out For Leal
Senior Dani Leal is off to a hot start, hitting .545 with four home runs, 18 total bases and a 1.636 on base percentage. The shortstop from Mexico City, Mexico, set a new Getterman Classic for home runs in the tournament, smashing quatro.
400
Head coach Glenn Moore, in his 11th season, is one win shy of becoming the first coach in program history to reach the 400-win plateau. With a career record of 399-207 (.658), Moore has averaged nearly 40 wins each of his 10 seasons at Baylor. Head baseball coach, Steve Smith, is the only other active head coach with more wins at Baylor.
Canion Climbing The Charts
Canion sits in fourth all-time in career strikeouts at Baylor with 516. With three seasons to play, she needs 265 to tie Cristin Vitek's career record 759 and sits 94 away from tying Stacy Allison and Lisa Ferguson for second with 610.
Tough Schedule
Just take one look at the 2011 schedule and you will see what a gauntlet it is. The Lady Bears will face nine teams ranked in the top-25, including No. 1/1 UCLA and No. 4/2 Arizona. Additionally, BU will face four other teams that are receiving votes. The 54-game schedule features 27 home games and 24 games against 14 teams that were selected to the 2010 NCAA Championship, including six contests against 2010 Women's College World Series programs.
