WACO, Texas - The Baylor softball team (7-0) remained perfect and gave head coach Glenn Moore the 400th win of his Baylor career, defeating New Mexico (3-2) 7-2 in game one and 4-0 in game two. Kelsi Kettler combined for four RBI and a pair of doubles in the two games, while Whitney Canion (3-0) and Courtney Repka (3-0) combined for complete-game victories.
GAME ONE
Baylor 7, New Mexico 2
Canion struck out 15 batters, allowing seven hits, one earned run and one walk in a complete-game win over New Mexico. The 15 strikeouts marked the 18th time Canion has had a 10-plus strikeout game in her career and were the most strikeouts for her in a seven-inning game in her career.
Scoreless through three and a half innings, the Lady Bears finally got on the scoreboard with a sac fly from Holly Holl that scored Turk from third for a 1-0 lead.
New Mexico answered with a pair in the fifth, as a single from Stefanie Carramusa brought in Kaity Ingram from second, but a bobble in center field allowed Chelsea Anaya to come around from first for a 2-1 lead.
Baylor evened the game in the bottom of the fifth with an RBI groundout to third base that scored Sydney Wilson from third.
The Lady Bears busted the game open in the sixth that was led off by back-to-back singles from Megan Turk and Dani Leal. Shelbi Redfearn then hit into a fielder's choice on a bunt, and the catcher's throw to third went to the outfield to score Turk. Holl then singled to load the bases and Kettler came in to pinch hit and ripped a double to right center, scoring two for a 5-2 lead. With no outs and runners at second and third, an illegal pitch was called that scored Holl and a Clare Hosack sac fly to bring in Chelsea Kovich ended the scoring.
GAME TWO
Baylor 4, New Mexico 0
Repka threw a complete-game shutout, striking out two, walking one and allowing just four hits for the win, while Kettler went 2-for-3 and drove in two more runs, as Baylor won the nightcap, 4-0.
All of the game's runs occurred in the second, with Baylor putting up a four-spot. Shelbi Redfearn doubled to put runners at second and third, and following a Holl walk, Sydney Wilson walked for an RBI and a 1-0 lead. That brought Kettler to the plate, who hit her second double of the night to drive in two runs for a 3-0 advantage. With Wilson on third, Kovich grounded to second, scoring Wilson, and putting the Lady Bears up four.
Repka retired 18 of her final 20 batters to collect the win.
Baylor will wrap up the three-game series beginning at 11:30 a.m. on Saturday at Getterman Stadium.
