CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - Baylor's third-ranked women's tennis team mounted a major comeback, but fell just short to No. 23 Virginia in the first round of the ITA Women's National Team Indoor Championship in Charlottesville, Va., on Friday at the Boar's Head Sports Club.
"I am proud of the way we fought back and put ourselves in a position to win the match," head coach Joey Scrivano said. "It was a great effort and comeback, but the bottom line is we have to improve. We are not at our best right now, and all of our focus has to be on getting better each day."
The tournament-host Virginia got the momentum rolling with a strong doubles performance, and carried it over into singles, pushing their lead to 3-0 with the first two singles victories. But, after Baylor clawed back to tie the match at 3-3, the right to advance in the tournament fell on Court 2.
Baylor's 30th-ranked Diana Nakic fell down a set to UVA's 67th-ranked Lindsey Hardenburgh, but battled back to earn a 7-5 win in the second set. With Nakic up 5-3 in the third, it was Hardenburgh's turn to flip the score, winning three consecutive games to take a 6-5 lead. The momentum changes weren't done yet, as Nakic forced a tiebreak and took a commanding 6-3 lead in the race to seven.
But, just as the match had gone all day between the teams, it was far from over as Hardenburgh defeated three match points and scored five in a row to win the set and earn her team a 4-3 victory.
Starting out the match, Virginia rolled out three ranked doubles pairs against the Lady Bears, and showed why they are all in the top 65. On court 1, UVA's 10th-ranked Emily Fraser and Hana Tomljanovic defeated Diana Nakic and Sona Novakova 8-1, while the No. 51 duo of Maria Fucillo and Rashmi Teltumbde earned an 8-2 win over BU's Karolina Filipiak and Abby Stainback.
Baylor started their comeback with a dominating victory on Court 4 from Jelena Stanivuk. The senior came out on a mission with a 6-2 first set over 54th-ranked Erin Vierra, and finished off the match 6-4 in the second set.
With the momentum seemingly starting to change hands for the first time, Filipiak and Novakova each earned three-set wins in nearly the same fashion to knot the score at 3-3. Both players earned a tie-break win in the first set before dropping the second set.
On Court 5, Filipiak, ranked 116th, lost her second set 6-1, but came back in the third to win 6-3 over Fucillo. Meanwhile, No. 12 Novakova dropped her second set to No. 41 Fraser, but also earned a 6-3 victory in the third to seal the match.
The Lady Bears will be back on the court on Saturday in consolation action, taking on 11th-ranked Tennessee at 9 a.m. ET/8 a.m. CT. The Lady Vols took a 4-1 first-round loss to No. 6 Duke on .
