CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - After suffering an opening-round loss yesterday, Baylor's third-ranked women's tennis team bounced back with a commanding 4-1 win over No. 11 Tennessee in consolation round action at the ITA Women's National Team Indoor Championship in Charlottesville, Va.
"It was great for us to bounce back after a tough one yesterday," head coach Joey Scrivano said. "I am proud of the way the ladies showed mental toughness in taking the win over a good Tennessee team today. We had a great sense of urgency and our focus level was a lot better today from start to finish."
The Lady Bears dropped the doubles point for the fourth match in a row, but didn't miss a beat in singles, quickly dispatching Tennessee with four singles wins in a row.
On Court 1 in singles, 12th-ranked Sona Novakova earned a top-40 win in straight sets over 39th-ranked Natalie Pluskota 6-2, 6-2, while No. 53 Nina Secerbegovic scored an identical victory over Maria Sorbello.
Comfortably in the lead, the Lady Bears cruised to victory with wins on Courts 5 and 6. Abby Stainback earned her first dual-match singles win in a Baylor uniform with the clinching point in a 6-4, 6-3 victory over Whitney Wofford. Jelena Stanivuk continued her hot streak with her fifth consecutive win, taking a 6-4, 6-2 victory over Millie Nichols.
"It was great to see Abby apply what she has been working on in practice in a big match," Scrivano said. "She played some great tennis today against a really good player."
The Lady Vols had controlled doubles play with wins on Courts 2 and 3. UT's Rosalia Alda and Sorbello beat Secerbegovic and Stanivuk 8-3, while Kata Szekely and Jennifer Meredith took down BU's Stainback and Karolina Filipiak, 8-1.
Baylor will be back in action on Sunday in second-round consolation action, taking on seventh-ranked UCLA. The Bruins were defeated by No. 12 Clemson on Friday, 4-3, but took down No. 9 Miami 4-2 on Saturday morning. The match is slated to begin at 9 a.m. ET/8 a.m. CT.
