The Baylor softball team (8-0) kept its undefeated record alive behind a solid pitching performance from freshman Liz Paul en route to a 3-1 win over New Mexico (3-3) on Saturday to complete the three-game sweep. The Lady Bears are off to their best start since beginning 2007 with a 9-0 mark.
"I am proud that we pushed through for the sweep," head coach Glenn Moore. "We certainly have a long way to go, but that is what these early season games are for. We are winning our games right now, and that is what is most important."
Paul (2-0) allowed just four hits, one walk and two strikeouts in 5.0 innings of work. Whitney Canion came on for her first save of the season, walking one, striking out five and giving up one run in 2.0 innings. Dani Leal went 2-for-2 on the day, while Megan Turk extended her hitting streak to five games.
Baylor got all the wins it would need in the fourth inning, putting up a three-spot. Holly Holl walked to begin the inning, and with one out, Jordan Vannatta singled to put runners at first and second. KJ Freeland then singled on a bunt in front of the catcher, but a bad throw to first got away, allowing both Holl and Vannatta to score for a 2-0 lead. A single by Kayce Walker put her on first, and a double steal from Walker and Freeland put runners in scoring position. Kathy Shelton drove in Baylor's lone RBI of the day, grounding out to second to score Freeland for the 3-0 advantage.
New Mexico got on the board in the sixth, with Jess Garcia doubling and coming around to score on an RBI-groundout to second. Canion shut the door with two strikeouts in the seventh to end the game, as the Lobos went in order.
Baylor will hit the road for the first time this season, traveling to Northwestern State for a 5:00 p.m. game on Monday, followed by a doubleheader at Louisiana Tech starting at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday.
