The Baylor softball team (8-0) will look to keep its undefeated streak alive, heading to the Pelican State for three games in less than 24 hours. The Lady Bears will face Northwestern State (6-4) Monday at 5:00 p.m. before traveling to Ruston, La., for a doubleheader against Louisiana Tech (3-6) on Tuesday beginning at 2:00 p.m.
"These are our first road games of the season, so it will be good to get out of our comfort zone," head coach Glenn Moore said. "We have a lot of work to do, so it is nice to get back out on the field again to play this quickly."
Baylor is coming off a three-game sweep of New Mexico and is off to its best start since beginning 9-0 in 2007. Dani Leal leads the BU offense with a .529 batting average, four home runs and six RBI. In the circle, the Lady Bears have a team ERA of 1.12, led by Whitney Canion's (3-0) 0.91 mark. The sophomore has 42 strikeouts in 23.0 innings of work so far this season.
Northwestern State wrapped up a 2-2 weekend at the Sleep Inn Classic in Denton, Texas, with wins over Centenary and Tennessee Tech, and falling to No. 21 Nebraska and North Texas. Baylor leads the all-time series with Northwestern State, 17-2.
The return to Natchitoches will be a homecoming for Moore, who was a tight end for the Demons in 1988 and 1989, helping Northwestern State win the Southland Conference championship in 1988. He was also a volunteer assistant softball coach for two seasons before becoming a full-time assistant in 1992.
Louisiana Tech went 1-3 at the Mississippi State Bulldog Round Robin, defeating Butler and losing to Butler, Mississippi State and Southern Illinois. The Lady Techsters lead the series, 30-12, including a 12-0 mark in Ruston.
